Support Apple's dynamic text sizing in web content (iOS Safari & WebViews)

To support dynamic type in iOS, we need to set Apple's

Algorithmic layouts

You are looking at the most important, and most abundant thing on the web. You can't see it, unfortunately, because it's very small… aaaaand it's invisible — so having a magnifying glass doesn't really help here. But still.

I'm talking, of course, about U+0020; not to be confused with the band U2, who are just as ubiquitous, but far less useful.

This unicode point, representing the humble space character, is between every word, in every run of text, on every page of the web. And it has a very special characteristic: it's not sticky like glue. If two words are neighbors but there's not enough room for both of them, the space will free the second word to wrap around and start a new line.

Before getting into flexible containers, viewport meta tags, and @media breakpoints this humble character is what makes the web fundamentally 'responsive'. That is: able to change the layout of its content to suit different devices, contexts, and settings. Browser text does this automa

Using minitest to regression test your Jekyll static site

Using minitest to regression-test your Jekyll static site

I recently had to upgrade my blog, which involved changes such as:

  • Replacing a sitemap plugin
  • Upgrading from jekyll 2.5.3 to 3.8.4
  • Upgrading from jekyll-assets 0.7.8 to 3.0.11
  • (etc)

The upgrading process was not trivial, and some parts (e.g. RSS, sitemap, or twitter cards tags) are not immediately visible, so I decided to add unit tests on the generated content.

trr prefs

Preferences

All preferences for the DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) functionality in Firefox are located under the "network.trr" prefix (TRR == Trusted Recursive Resolver). The support for these landed in Firefox 60 and has been improved in Firefox 61. Goto about:config to set these preferences.

Some users have reported needing to restart to have the changes take effect. The DNS tab of the about:networking page will indicate whether a name was resolved via TRR or not.

network.trr.mode

set this preference to 2 to enable DoH in a mode where DoH is used as the first choice for DNS, but it will still fallback to native DNS for full backwards compatibility. Set to 0 to disable DoH.

Mac Network Commands Cheat Sheet

Disclaimer: I'm not the original author of this sheet, but can't recall where I found it. If you know the author, please let me know so I give the attribution.

The original author seems to be Charles Edge, here's the original content, as pointed out by @percisely.

Note: Since this seems to be helpful to some people, I formatted it to improve readability of the original. Also, note that this is from 2016, many things may have changed, and I don't use macOS anymore, so I probably can't help in case of questions, but maybe someone else can.

Mac Network Commands Cheat Sheet

After writing up the presentation for MacSysAdmin in Sweden, I decided to go ahead and throw these into a quick cheat sheet for anyone who’d like to have them all in one place. Good luck out there, and s
