Convert curl|bash to an rpm with Docker and FPM
% docker build -t rust .
...
# Export the image to tarball, which itself contains tarballs and a manifest.json
% docker save -o rust.tar rust
# Extract the last layer
# tar's -O flag extracts a single entry from the tarball.
# The file we want is the last "Layer" in the manifest.json
% tar -xf rust.tar -O $(tar -xf rust.tar -O manifest.json | jq -r '.[].Layers[-1]') > curlbash.tar

Using Grunt with a Cordova 3 project.

Grunt and Cordova 3

The advantages of using Grunt with Cordova:

  1. It simplifies working with the cordova cli.
  2. It provides a mechanism to copy platform customization to the platforms directory without having to commit the generated plugins and platforms directories to version control.
  3. It provides a way to watch resources and automatically run cordova commands.

Stack Overflow: .gitignore for PhoneGap/Cordova 3.0 projects - what should I commit?

a simple git branching model

a simple git branching model (written in 2013)

This is a very simple git workflow. It (and variants) is in use by many people. I settled on it after using it very effectively at Athena. GitHub does something similar; Zach Holman mentioned it in this talk.

Update: Woah, thanks for all the attention. Didn't expect this simple rant to get popular.

ideal ops checklist

In a perfect world, where things are done well, not just quickly, I would expect to find the following when joining the company:

Documentation

  • Accurate / up-to-date systems architecture diagram

  • Accurate / up-to-date network diagram

  • Out-of-hours support plan

  • Incident management plan

# Recursively add a .gitignore file to all directories
# in the working directory which are empty and don't
# start with a dot. Helpful for tracking empty dirs
# in a git repository.
find . -type d -regex ``./[^.].*'' -empty -exec touch {}"/.gitignore" \;
