Speaker bio

I am a Rubyist turned polyglot. I currently work at Sabre Labs, where we experiment with the intersection of emerging and current technologies. I don't always write code in Ruby, but when I do I prefer to write backend servers and services.

An Intersection Of Ruby, Native, and Hardware Hacks

Abstract

Where am I and what's around me? GPS and Wifi are already in use to provide location, but it's not good enough to tell specifically where you are inside a building. Using a combination of Rails, Objective-C, and hardware I am able to determine where you are, and where you are inside a building. Come learn about a project where I prototyped an airport to make your travel experience better by telling you where you are throughout the series of checkpoints you go through as move through the airport.

Notes

I'll be giving a version of this talk at Mountain West Ruby. I loved this project. It was the first time I got to dig deep into Objective-C. I had done a handful of apps, one of which is available in the App Store, but in this project I experimented with a handful of location/proximity methodologies that I also implemented for Android. I also got to play with Raspberry Pi and a couple of BLE boards and devices. It was a LOT of fun.
