Just to clarify, these movies don't strictly have to be from the 70s or 80s, just have that basic quality shared by many of these movies. Also this is a collection of suggestions and nothing here has been vetted or endorsed so view at your own risk! :)

Not sure what your parameters for "family friendly" are. Some of those have a scene or two that might be awkward to watch with your kid. Also, "They Live" doesn't seem any kind of friendly.

@gwhilts Agreed, I'm pretty sure my daughter would crap her pants with They Live. But it'll be fun when she's older. And I'm willing to accept a little awkwardness! But that said, I either screen before hand or watch with my finger on the pause button.

Time Bandits. I re-watched that a few years ago. I remember seeing it when I was about 9 and I spaced out at the wrong time and then had no idea what was going on for the rest of the movie! :)

Noting some other suggestions which I haven't put on the list yet but may.

  • Bad News Bears
  • Zardoz (can't tell if Stephen is kidding w/ this one or not)
  • Forrest Gump
  • Watership Down
  • Cornbread, Earl and Me - This one may wait until Emily's a little older. Sounds rough, like The Outsiders.
  • Cooley High

NOTE: Some of these are better for older kids, so parents must still use their heads. For example, Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Indiana Jones series all contain some brutal violence and are very scary in parts.
