What would you like to do?
Recompile your WSL2 kernel - support for snaps, apparmor, lxc, etc.

NOTE

See https://gist.github.com/cerebrate/d40c89d3fa89594e1b1538b2ce9d2720#gistcomment-3563688 below before doing anything else.

Recompile your WSL2 kernel - support for snaps, apparmor, lxc, etc.

Yes, I've done this, and yes, it works. It is, however, entirely unsupported and assembled through reasonable guesswork, so if you try this and it explodes your computer, brain, career, relationships, or anything else, you agree that you take sole responsibility for doing it, that I never claimed it was a good idea, and that you didn't get these instructions from me .

Also note: I have done this with Debian Stretch. While one kernel ought to fit all, some of the packages you need to build it may be different. Adapting to other distros is up to you.

Step One: Install the stuff you need to build the kernel

sudo apt install build-essential flex bison libssl-dev libelf-dev

If you're going to tinker with the kernel config file (and why would you be doing this if you didn't want to tinker with the kernel config, you may wish to use the friendly X-based config mechanism. If so, also do this:

sudo apt install qt5-default pkg-config

Step Two: Clone the latest kernel source

git clone https://github.com/microsoft/WSL2-Linux-Kernel.git

Step Three: Make sure you are compiling it the Microsoft way

Which is to say, first, clone their config so you don't leave anything out. In the folder you just cloned the kernel into:

cp Microsoft/config-wsl .config

Step Four: Edit the configuration

Pick your method, any one of:

nano .config
make menuconfig
make xconfig

Myself, I like the graphical configuration editor of make xconfig, but you also have the text-mode menu-driven one in make menuconfig, and if you happen to be really familiar with how this stuff works already, you can just dig in with nano, or vi, or your other favorite text editor.

NOTE: If you are not absolutely certain what you are doing, I recommend not taking anything OUT. Add what you need, but leave the existing settings alone!

I also recommend changing the CONFIG_LOCALVERSION setting, which is set to "-microsoft-standard", to a different version string. This is useful later when you're trying to figure out which custom kernel you're actually running. It doesn't matter much what you change it to, since it's an arbitrary identifier.

If you don't want to muck around with the config yourself, I have added to this gist my .config, which adds in squashfs, apparmor, a few networking settings needed to get LXC containers up and running, and some other minor things. Feel free to use it.

Step Five: Compile the Kernel

make

then wait. When you're done with the compilation, copy the compiled image to somewhere on the Windows filesystem (i.e., outside WSL).

cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage /mnt/c/Working

Step Six: Exit WSL and shut it down

I.e., after you exit all your WSL sessions, run

wsl --shutdown

for good measure and wait for it to complete.

Step Six: BACK UP THE OLD (MICROSOFT-PROVIDED) KERNEL

In Explorer, go to C:\Windows\System32\lxss\tools . There is a file in that folder called, obviously enough, kernel .

Rename that file to kernel.old. You will receive a UAC prompt, as you will also in the next step.

Step Seven: Install your new kernel

Copy the bzImage file you copied out earlier (in Step Five) into its place, and rename it kernel.

Step Eight: Try it!

Open up your WSL prompt, and see if it works. If it does, run uname -a. If you see the custom local version I suggested you set back in Step Four in the output, then everything's working properly.

And that's how you change out your WSL 2 kernel. In conjunction with genie ( https://github.com/arkane-systems/genie ), that should get most things working for you.

Thanks very much for sharing this gist! Have you shared this back with the community at all and/or have you heard any updates from WSL team on when something like this would be supported "out of box"?

This thread seems closely related - although I'm not familiar enough with the kernel internals for it to make much sense to me personally: microsoft/WSL#994

Sure, that's why I published the gist. (You're welcome!) It's actually supported out of box now since build 18947, when they introduced the .wslconfig file ( https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/WSL/releases/tag/18947 ), so now you can just copy the compiled kernel to any suitable location in the Windows file system and use it from there, rather than mucking about with replacing the default WSL kernel file in steps 6 and 7.

(I keep my own kernel source/config over here - https://github.com/cerebrate/WSL2-Linux-Kernel - with an applyKernel script to run after building to copy it into the appropriate place.)

994's a systemd issue, not a kernel issue, and so far as I know there are no official plans to support systemd. I have published my own utility to do this, though, by running systemd inside a transparent Linux container. It's available at https://github.com/arkane-systems/genie .

Hey cerebrate! I've been trying to replace the original kernel with a compiled version. I've copied bzImage to %USERPROFILE%, created a .wslconfig file (with the double backslash on the path) but it doesn't seem to be working for me. uname -r shows the same original version. Also, replacing the original kernel file under system32 seems to have no effect. Do you know what might be wrong?

That sounds like you did everything right to me, unfortunately, assuming you killed and restarted the distro after making the changes.

...this is one of those "is it plugged in?"-level questions, for which I apologize, but wsl -l -v does show it as version 2, right? If the distro setup got confused on this point, somehow, that would look as if the replacement kernel had no effect.

The -v parameter isn't recognized. Anyway, I've had opened an issue on WSL Github. Someone replied me that WSL2 isn't available on the windows build I'm running (10.0.18363.778) and a guy from MS gave a thumbs up to that answer and closed the issue. It looks like your "is it plugged in?" question might have nailed it. I've entered the insider program and as of now, I'm downloading 19619.1000 (living on the edge, eh?) and I bet it will work.

Anyway, thanks a lot for being so kind and replying so fast.

would this let me use macvlan when running docker desktop in WSL2 mode? or am i assuming waaaay to much?

also

cp Microsoft/config-wsl .config

should be

cp Microsoft/config-wsl ./config

(assuming one is in the WSL2-Linux-Kernel directory

Thanks for your awesome work, I tested it and it works fine.
We aren't able to connect VS Code wsl2 remote extension. Is there any work around.
Perhaps, socket cannot not be established between VS Code client and VS Code server !

I'm afraid I don't know of any problem the custom kernel would cause with the WSL2 remote extension (my custom kernel works fine with VSC). Does it work with the default one?

Yes, unfortunately VSCode doesn't work for me.
Any tips are recommended for this issue. Perhaps, you may share a precompiled version of a tested functional kernel !
Mininet & openvswitch are working perfectly

@cerebrate : its seems there is a tip that allow loading modules for WSL2 without building a kernel

I tried it but doesn't work for me, I am wondering if you passed through it ?

Its more than modules to get snapd strict confinement mode working. You need the out of tree kernel patches for it to work. Fortunately there's already a snapd kernel made you can use so all you need to do is compile it .

Also, ignore the part about replacing the default kernel. This is never recommended. Instead take the custom kernel somewhere else and define the path in .wslconfig. this way, if you encounter issues, you can quickly comment the line out and get back to a working kernel. You just need to do wsl --shutdown when you switch kernels.

Thanks for putting this in a gist!

One thing you can do instead of needing to backup the kernel is create a .wslconfig in your user directory. That way you can simply remove it if you install a busted kernel :-D

mkdir /mnt/c/custom_kernel
cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage /mnt/c/custom_kernel

cat >/mnt/c/Users/pegleg/.wslconfig<<EOL
[wsl2]
kernel=c:\\\\custom_kernel\\\\bzImage
localhostForwarding=True
EOL

Close your current terminal session then open a admin powershell prompt

wsl --shutdown
Restart-Service LxssManager

Open a new terminal and if you compiled it right presto.

Just as a general note for anyone arriving here now: this gist is very obsolete now that WSL 2 has been updated several times. Don't replace the kernel, use .wslconfig the way the official documentation tells you.

Also, when building the custom kernel, I now suggest using the specific instructions for your distribution rather than a generic make. For example, since I use debian, this means building the kernel with make deb-pkg , and then using dpkg -i to install the resulting linux-headers-* , linux-image-* and linux-libc-dev-* packages before copying the kernel image from /boot to the Windows folder you specified in .wslconfig. This can and will save you a great deal of pain later (especially if something you're running makes use of DKMS) when it turns out that your headers, or worse, your libc don't match your new kernel.

  • @cerebrate, would please give detailed example of your last comment dpkg -i to install the resulting linux-headers-* , etc. For those who are not familiar with compiling the kernel.
  • Also, did you try building the last kernel 5.4 as it didn't work for me, only 4.19.84-microsoft-standard works for me.
  • While 4.19.84 is OK, but I receive this message "An error occurred while mounting one of your file systems. Please run the "dmesg" command for more information" and my /mnt/c/ is not accessible from WSL2. Any workaround to solve this is welcome.

Hi @hakiri,

I see that you managed to get openvswitch and mininet working in wsl2. I'm also trying to do but probably missing something. I recompiled the 5.4 kernel with given instructions and the CONFIG_OPENVSWITCH=m and CONFIG_BRIDGE=m and their dependencies and I can start ovs and mininet but switching does not seem to funtion. I load the kernel modules in the right order: first openvswitch than bridge.

mn --test pingall -v debug shows that ping does not work. Entering into the namespaces and issue ping manually shows that mininet hosts cannot reach each other. It's like switching does not function. What am I missing? Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I found the problem, the openvswitch-testcontroller in ubuntu 20.04 does not play nice with wsl2, crashes every time mininet tries to launch it. On Ubuntu 18.04 it works well but then Docker Desktop doesn't wanna work with a recompiled kernel on 18.04 while it works without problem on 20.04. So I just took the older binary of the openvswitch-testcontroller from 18.04 and replaced the 20.04 version and mininet started work.
Also I found that 5.4 kernel won't compile on Ubuntu18.04, it has some problem around DX drivers, but with Ubuntu20.04 it compiles fine.

I could only get this to work in WSL2 using the microsoft kernel sources , which makes sense as it's a fancy docker container with specific needs?

As a long time Gentoo Linux user, configuring and compiling the kernel is routine. The steps I used are identical to above except:

  1. make -j# (# being number of cores). This makes the compile faster..
  2. Since there may be modules in your custom kernel, also add: make modules_install
  3. There is a character limit to: CONFIG_LOCALVERSION="-microsoft-standard" so don't make it too long!
  4. As stated above, it is safer to create the .wslconfig and have it point to your new kernel.
  5. These instructions may vary depending on the distro being used. However, the new kernel should be shown across all the distros in WSL2. I used Ubuntu as the default and created and compiled the kernel there.

@cerebrate
why should we use a compilation process specific to distro? I'm assuming microsoft doesn't, am i wrong?

maybe i'm just unfamiliar with the issues (you mention DKMS for example).

i'd appreciate any links, thanks

You don't have to, strictly speaking. Just compiling it as above will work for most things.

But what it doesn't do is register your new kernel with the package management system (whatever your distro uses, it undoubtedly distributes a kernel image this way, and it is probably a good idea if the kernel it thinks it's using is the one that it's actually using), provide the kernel headers (needed if you're going to be compiling kernel modules separately from the kernel, or using DKMS), or provide the kernel headers for userspace that libc uses (instead, you get the ones for the kernel the distro thinks you're using, which may or may not match the kernel you just compiled).

This will probably not cause you any problems unless you're doing something interesting, but if it does, you'll have weird and obscure problems that are a pain in the ass to diagnose.

But since the kernel has support for building various types of packages built right into the makefile, you might as well use it.

Hey @cerebrate great work on this and genie.

I'm having issues with this. I'm trying to get apparmor working as I run ha on Debian in wsl2. I've updated the config with all the apparmor and disabled other security.

It's running the kernel and shows apparmor enabled but doesn't work. I saw you have an updated apparmor in your git and I used that to see if fixed it but it doesn't.

Any help on steps needed to get apparmor working on wsl2 greatly appreciated

@north3221 Got to say first, this post (and the kernel config it contains) is very obsolete at this point.

I have a more current solution for getting AppArmor up and running under WSL here:

https://randombytes.substack.com/p/apparmor-on-wsl-2?r=8byfa&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&utm_source=

Try that one, and if it doesn't work for you, open an issue over in the genie repo, 'cause we'll probably need to do some debugging?

@cerebrate legend!

I couldn't get the patch to apply using git (assume that's how supposed to do it, error line 23 when trying) , so did it manually as only a few lines. It still didnt work, but a bit of debugging, turned out I'd not put the kernel boot command in my .wslconfig properly formatted, doh!

This, along with your genie for systemd have a pretty nice set up with ha in wsl. Thanks very much

Dont suppose you worked out a way to give WSL2 a static mac by any chance?

Unfortunately, most of the networking foo is hidden in places where we can't get at it. There are kluges for bridged networking (which have to be redone at every reboot because the networking system resets itself) and some baroque extra kluges using some types of VPNs, but nothing so simple as that, alas.

Yeah I have bridged networking set up and running on a static ip that even survives a restart. My only issue left is the renewing of mac address every wsl2 creation. One of my HA integrations uses mac as part of what device it authenticated so it needs to be re-auth'd every time :-(

Although I say only issue, but as part of asking you about apparmor I was sorting HA to run supervisor as they like, so upgraded Debian 10 -> 11, enable apparmor and remove any other non HA containers.

To do the last one I set up a second wsl2 with Ubuntu for running my other stuff. Works for a while then localhost connectivity dies after a while, so I think cause both wsl2 containers share the same network config its confusing things... back to drawing board on that one.

I find wsl2 so close but yet so far.... fun and games playing though

Error on snap for WSL-Debian needed by Heroku-cli installation packaged
Hi guys
I am having an error installing the snap package on distro Debian, necessary to install the Heroku client for deploying a python-telegram-bot. These are the commands needed:

$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install snapd
$ sudo snap install core

Then:

$ sudo snap install heroku --classic

when I put this command: sudo snap install core then, I get this error message :

WARNING: cannot create syslog logger
error: cannot communicate with server: Post http://localhost/v2/snaps/core: dial unix /run/snapd-snap.socket: connect: no such file or directory.

I have been trying a few commands, so, I first check out the version installed of snap, and get this:

2.21-2+deb9u1
snapd
unavailable
series -

Then I tried systemctl status snapd.service and got:

Failed to connect to bus: No such file or directory

I have begun to work on WSL-Debian a week ago, for the facilities to install and manage virtual environments for web apps. So, I need to install Heroku-CLI to deploy the bot-telegram.

so, Can I follow the above steps on WSL1?
