Last Boy Scouts

The Last Boy Scouts

Early History

Back in November 2000 a trio of new-to-the-scene Counter-Strike players decided it was time to start their own clan. Despite one of the three still preferring TFC (ahem Hal cough) they successfully devised a concept for, and launched The Last Boy Scouts.

The name comes from the eponymous film, which we had probably just watched. We don't remember. What we do know is that it's still a damn fine action movie with some great one-liners. Check it out if you haven't already. Don't be put off by the reviews - The Last Boy Scout is nothing more than lovable trash. A Bit like us.

When those three players renamed themselves after characters from the film: Jimmy Dix, Hallenbeck and Milo, clan LBS was born.

Ranks

Wanting to give ourselves some sort of unique twist and not wanting to go down the "l337" route of bizarre and unreadable ASCII text tags we devised our now legendary ranks system. A lot of people think this is a serious (and pretentious), military style system that's strictly enforced, yet this couldn't be further from the truth. We're not the army, and don't want to be. The ranks are actually more of a semi-ironic nod towards two other cinematic greats that have inspired us: Aliens and Starship Troopers. No one can deny the characters and camaraderie in these films is a cool thing. It also gives a degree of recognition and responsibility to the players that want it - it gives them something to aspire to and rewards them for putting in extra effort.

We currently have four ranks - Private (Pvt.), Sergeant (Sgt.), Lieutenant (Lt.) and Captain. This isn't a true-to-life structure, but we thought it makes sense in the context of a CS clan, so this is what we stuck with. So next time you see one of our Private's on a server, demand he gets down and gives you 20. It's what's he's conditioned for.

Where We Play

We spent the first year of our existence building up numbers. We have had some brilliant players come and go,and yet more who have cut their teeth on clan play with us then gone on to start their own clans.

When we found what is still today probably the most friendly server about - BAGOM Midnight Assault - we started to grow as a clan and become more than just cannon fodder. No other server has given us the opportunity to get to know so many friendly people and clans and to grow as players.

Lately we've also been frequenting another server run by the Muppets, which is a clan founded by one of our very own ex-members. Muppet Central is another very friendly server that has a regular troop of players who are always a challenge and always great to play and have a laugh with.

Troubled Times

We've faced some downs as well as ups too. A certain - now infamous - ex-player of ours, notorious for his trouble making caused for our then leader Jimmy Dix to resign to be replaced by Sergeant Hallenbeck. Dix later returned as Jim Carver (the drunken police officer from "The Bill"), so it all turned out alright in the end. The aforementioned player was unceremoniously ejected from the clan for committing a most heinous crime which we won't go into here. Suffice to say it pissed a lot of people off.

Good Times and the Future

But we continue to grow a a clan and as players. We've taken our time to get where we are today and have truly gelled as a collective. We're not an overly serious clan, although we do like to win (anyone that says they don't like to win is either lying or Jesus in disguise). We are a strong community with a good mix of players young and old, skilled and casual. Our sense of balance is our strongest point - we're neither too elite nor too crap. Neither too serious or too chilled out. Our solid performance in our first season of division 3 league play reflects that and its a trend we hope to continue.

So that's LBS as we stand now. We are moving forward as a clan and we're looking forward to the new style of play Counter-Strike 1.4 is heralding. May the pogo-brigade rest in peace and CS as it should be flourish. Long live CS!

To be continued...

No way! Who is this? I can't believe I've just stumbled across this post! I used to be in LBS around 2002 to 2004 or there abouts. I was Exce or Excedrin. I was there with Senex, Dogboy, Silverfish, Pippen, Milo, teamx, Mag, etc

Spent far too many hours on Muppet Central and SAS servers. This was a great blast from the past. Made my week!!!

Hello old pal. It's Captain Hallenbeck here. I threw this up because I wanted to salvage something from the rubble of that era. Happy days, eh? 🙂

They were great days! Definitely some of my favourite CS memories.

I'd say you savaged a lot. I've just spent 30 min trying to explain CS, clans, PCWs, and hour and hours spent on IRC to my wife. She even commented how funny it was that I was so enthusiastic about it all these years later.

There's never been anything like it since - no game has come close for me. Some of the most fun and memorable days of my life were spent on those servers and in IRC. LBS FTW. ❤

I couldn't agree more. I never found anything else like it either, nothing drew me in like CS did. So many good memories.

It's been a few years, but I just wanted to post and let you know that Warzone 2.0 and DMZ has really captured my attention. I've really enjoyed playing - almost like the old CS days. Toigh learning curve at this age! But fun. No IRC, but discord has been good. I've even found a bunch of oldies to play with hahah.

Anyway, just thought I'd let you know if you wanted to check it out. It's free to play.
