mlgrm's run ubuntu in crostini

this gist is out of date and remains here only for reference

This is just a modification of this reddit to minimize copying and pasting, make it less interactive, and to allow creation of a username of your choice instead of the default google email address.

Pixelbook or Pixel Slate Setup

Partly updated June 2023

General caution: Chrome OS is a secure OS by design, but this has at least one key consequence. If you change your Google account password, you will still be required to enter the old password the next time you access each Chrome OS device. Devices are encrypted with that password, so the OS needs to decrypt using the old password then re-encrypt using the new one. If you forget your old password you will lose access to your Chrome OS device data. As always, make sure you keep backups up to date.

Fast User Switching

If you have multiple Chrome OS accounts (Say, work and play), you can quickly sitch between them without logging out:

How to use node.js build routines and npm packages in Django.

Using Node.js With Django

When writing django apps it's easy to ignore the organization of your front end code. Often, these backend coders will just write a static js and css file, stick it in the static directory, and call it a day.

You can also build them as two completely independent parts. With a complex gulp build routine independent of the django app. But if you don't know gulp, node, or those kinds of systems it can be a daunting process to get started with.

Enter django-compressor-toolkit (the name doesn't quite roll off the tongue).

Setting Up Django-Compressor-Toolkit

Using django-compressor and django-compressor-toolkit you can write Javascript ES6 code with all its fancy import/export logic or style your pages with sass instead of css, and leave your deploy routine largely untouched.

Adding dependencies to local .jar files in pom.xml
If you'd like to use a .jar file in your project, but it's not available in any Maven repository,
you can get around this by creating your own local repository. This is done as follows:
1 - To configure the local repository, add the following section to your pom.xml (inside the <project> tag):
<repositories>
<repository>
<id>in-project</id>
<name>In Project Repo</name>
<url>file://${project.basedir}/libs</url>

How to resize Docker for Mac Disk image and set the default size for new images

Set the default size for new Docker for Mac disk images

UPDATE: The instructions here are no longer necessary! Resizing the disk image is now possible right from the UI since Docker for Mac Version 17.12.0-ce-mac49 (21995).

If you are getting the error: No space left on device

Configuring the qcow2 size cap is possible in the current versions:

# my disk is currently 64GiB
