Assignment 6: Untrack Me, link to assignment

Over the last year, I have stopped using Facebook for the most part as I find the content generated on the platform loud and unproductive. I have yet to delete my Facebook entirely because I still find useful in tracking down a friend every once in awhile. However, I don’t like that Facebook has all this data on me (data since 2008) that it uses to personify me and to sell to advertisers. I recently watched this video from The Wall Street Journal that provides details on how Facebook tracks and serves you advertisements.

Assignment 6: Blog Post: Reflection, link to assignment

Since taking this class, I have become more aware of what sites I am using and what accounts I am creating. I now look at the terms and conditions of new services. In doing so, I’ve realized how unfriendly and time-consuming this can be. While the purpose of these documents is to protect the company’s interest, I question whether or not it is ethical from a consumer point of view. The long, drawn out legal jargon would bore most people, hence why the t&c’s are often overlooked. Should there be a better standard for laying out the terms of use?

Assignment 5: Quant Self Intervention

The Problem

Within the last couple of years, I have gotten into the habit of automatically saving. I set up automatic transfers on the day of my paycheck to various saving and investing accounts to ensure it is out of sight, and I won’t spend it. Recently, I have been investing more actively. I find I enjoy it, but sometimes I get quite obsessive about it: watching the prices fluctuate, reading tons of breaking market news, and viewing my balance changes over time. Sometimes this leads me to make quick sell/buy decisions, which usually do not end in my favor.

Assignment 4: Blog Post: Reflection, link to assignment

Until this week, I have never done a service blueprint. While I am quite familiar with UX design techniques, I don’t have as much experience with service design. I like that service design incorporates the touchpoints a user might encounter, even ones that are not online or a part of the specific product experience. However, with blueprints, while they do a good job at providing a high-level overview of how things are mapped together, they are not so good for displaying the different paths a user might take. This is where I see user flows being a bit more comprehensive.

Assignment 4: Quant Self Service, link to assignment

The Question

I have been using a Fitbit for the past few months with interest in monitoring my heart rate. Outside of establishing my resting heart rate, I have yet to make much use of the data and what it means. In an earlier assignment, I reviewed Jakob Eg Larsen’s longitudinal tracking of his heart rate. After measuring his heart rate for over 4 years using different tracking devices, Larsen was able to correlate spikes in his heart rate with major illnesses. From this, I became interested in how heart rate can be used to signify health problems.

Assignment 3: Blog Post: Reflection, link to assignment

This week we reviewed multiple ways to represent and visualize data. Coming from a UX background, I question the effectiveness analog representation can have to a broader audience. With the examples given in class, several of the visualizations made no sense to an outsider without further explanation. While I see the validity of this from a personal or artistic point of view, I wonder about accessibility in discussing and representing data in order to empower larger audiences. Ultimately, it comes back to why you are gathering and visualizing your data. If it is for your own understanding of self, then whatever you decide helps you make sense of things is, therefore, valid.

Data Gathering

For my Dear Data project, I tracked the amount of work emails I RECEIVED this week and what I did with them. As far as tracking, I let Gmail do all the work, and then at the end of the week I reviewed all the emails I received since February 4th. I decided to bucket the emails based on how I handled them, resulting in 5 categories.

SO MUCH DATA. It is a bit overwhelming trying to sift through all the data available, especially as I learn python. This week I remembered how important it is to start with design thinking. It forced me to go back and really define my questions. I now need to ideate on how I imagine my data will work together to answer my questions before jumping back to code.
