Dev Team Perfects Hiring Process Immediately Before Interview, Again

Bypassing decades of research and study in the well-trodden fields of Recruitment and Selection, a team of developers stumbled upon the perfect hiring process this week in a 10-minute scramble before the candidate, Chris O'Shaughnessy, arrived on site.

“We take our hiring seriously,” said Steve Klegman, technical team lead. “The candidate was a guy that Dave Patterson knew from a previous job and we really wanted to make sure that we vetted him properly. So when all of our phones went off for the calendar reminder, we quickly scoured Google for the most fiendishly clever coding puzzle that we could find.”

"What we didn't expect was that we would find it in the first page of results," said Steve, now confident that he had identified the exact crucible that would prove whether or not this candidate was the best and brightest possible hire.

The technical challenge was administered to the candidate, shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Chris showed up in a Transformers shirt, jeans, and a hoodie and shared a laugh with the team prior to the test. “They were really good guys, just really funny,” reported Chris. “That one guy Kris likes Transformers, too. But not the new Michael Bay Transformers - the classic 1986 Transformers. That could have been a real deal-breaker.”

“I really got stuck there. I didn’t know what to do. But when Christian grabbed the marker and started drawing his own solution, it all started to make sense. Well, I mean, he wrote all of it, but when I stepped back and looked at the solution at the end, it really felt collaborative, you know?”

“I could see he was getting there, for sure. So I just gave him the push he needed. And he solved it,” said Christian, who had recommended Chris in the first place.

Asked if they had considered recording their now-perfected hiring process so that they could use it again for their next candidate, Kris responded with a noncommittal shrug.

Chris should expect to receive an offer letter by end-of-day Tuesday.
