How to download a streaming video with Google Chrome

How to download streaming video

Streaming just means a download that they don't want you to keep. But Chrome's developer tools make it easy to access what's really going on under the hood.

Open Developer Tools

From the page where you want to download some things, go into your chrome menu to open the developer tools. You can either:

1. (On a mac): Command-option-J
2. (On a PC): Control-alt-J
3. (In your menu on a mac): Open View > Developer > Developer Tools
4. (On any Chrome machine): The far right menu button, to the right of the URL bar, you can press that, go down to "Tools", then open the "Developer Tools".

Monitor Network Traffic

By clicking the "Network" tab, you'll get a list of all files requested since you opened that tab. Our goal is to isolate the web request that returns the video of your choice. At this point, you can navigate to the video you want, and I'd probably press the "clear" button in the developer tools right before finally pressing the "Play" button on the video, so it can be one of the only transfers you see.

Identify the video transfer

It should be easy to recognize the video transfer: It has a mime type of video, it's a transfer that should take a lot longer than the rest, etc.

Once you've found it, click on the request name, which represents the HTTP request that was sent to the server for the video file.

Identify the Request URL

The first thing in the first tab of the request viewer should be the Request URL in the Headers tab. You can just copy this URL into another video, and now if you right click the video, it should include a Save option, unlike when the whole thing was wrapped in Flash or whatever.

Enjoy!

@saurabh (https://gist.github.com/saurabh-kataria) this is probably due to a preventive measure by the application used to server the video file. Fo rinstance, modern versions of JW Player split the video into hundreds of 2 second long .ts files, which are displayed by JWPlayer as continuous video.

Downloading them by hand is tedious, and I haven't yet found a way to select all links/responses we can find in the developer tools network tab.

For all I know, the best way to do this at the moment is to find a so-called master m3u8 file that contains all the links to all the .ts files.

@japhigu @saurabh

Copy and paste one of the .ts video file URLs into a new tab in Chrome. Remove the identifying number of the .ts file (0,1,2,3 etc. or whatever number it is) and change the extension from ".ts" to ".mp4". That should bring up the video file in your browser as usual.

Sometimes you need to download all files and join them.

cat a.mp4 b.mp4 c.mp4 d.mp4 e.mp4 > output.mp4
ffmpeg -i a.webm -i output.mp4 oo.mp4

webm is the audio track.

Then you will be able to play oo.mp4.

In my case after pressing "start" video was loading partially, producing multiple requests, but in each request URL there was bytesstart and bytesend parameters in URL, like this: https://some/video/storage/?video-signature=blablabla&bytesstart=11111&bytesend=9999, so removing this parameters let me download entire video in one time. But I also faced another trouble... There wasn't sound on my video, so I continued trying. The solution was that the first request loaded audio and all other requests loaded video content, so I downloaded two files (video and audio) and joined them (I used ffmpeg). Thank you so much!

Hi everyone... Reading through the comments and through trial and error I found a quick way to download the videos that are being shown in the "network traffic" tab in chuncks (all those little ts files). This method uses JDownloader Beta v2. Once the video starts playing and you press F12 to get to the Dev Console / Network Traffic, you press F5 (from the Network Traffic tab) and the first file to appear is the playlist.m3u8 request. Click on it, take a look at the headers and with JDownloader open copy the Request URL which JDownloader will capture. If it is not, JDownloader will ask you to install the FFMPeg extension in order to join the chunks into one file. Once the extension is installed, everytime you capture an m3u8 playlist file, JDownloader will capture it and download the whole video file... 💃

I had to do the following for one site that used JW Player.

  1. Open the page for the video and play the video.
  2. Open developer view.
  3. Switch to Network view.
  4. Add filter = .mp4.m3u8
  5. When the results update, right-click the request and select Copy as cURL (cmd) and then copy to a text editor.
  6. The link will look like the following. You need the entire site URL including arguments to get the video file.
    curl "https://site/folder/videofile.mp4.m3u8?token=tokenvalue"
  7. Go to clipconverter.cc, get a free account or login. Once you have the URL, you can stop the original video, clipconverter.cc will use the URL to download the video components and build the output file.
  8. Go to Convert and paste the URL from above. Follow the instructions to convert.
  9. The conversion process will be longer than standard mp4 files retrieved from a site, since all of the individual components must be downloaded and collected into one file output file. For example, a 20 minute video took about 15 minutes.

Just to note, this is not for piracy but to simply download videos for offline viewing. I travel and often don't have great internet access (plane, hotels, etc.), so having the files on my laptop or external HD or NAS works best for me.

I forked this gist long ago. It seems like this method is getting out of date these days. In the meantime, I found a python package that works very well and is updated regularly to match many websites. Also, if you can mess around the devtools and determine how the video is handled by the browser, you may be able to write a recipe and submit it to the repo for inclusion.

Here's the repo: https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl

If you aren't interested in making recipes, you can just pip install youtube-dl.

Here is a "short" list of supported websites: https://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/supportedsites.html

You can actually download whole playlists on youtube and possibly others, but I have only tested playlists on youtube.

Y'all have fun and a great New Year! :)

In chrome you need to install FreeVPN and set location to United Kingdom, then you need to register for free account on channel4, with a fake UK address, after that you will be able to watch the videos for free.

The markdown style didn't get preserved, here it is now:

You can just copy this URL into another window/tab, and now if you right click the video, it should include a Save option, unlike when the whole thing was wrapped in Flash or whatever.

Enjoy!

@japhigu Thanks for the tip! I then found that using FFMpeg (for free) on the Mac Terminal command line worked perfectly to consolidate the tiny .ts files into one big mp4 video file. Example: ffmpeg -i http://embed.wistia.com/deliveries/blahBlahYadaYada.m3u8 -c copy -bsf:a aac_adtstoasc output.mp4 See: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/32528595/ffmpeg-mp4-from-http-live-streaming-m3u8-file

This worked! Thank you very much.

Hiya, when I try to download I can't find ts files or m3u8 files in the Network tab, I just get a list of mp4 and audio files, can anyone suggest a way to download it please?
When I download and play one of the mp4 files it is green and fuzzy with no sound
Thanks in advance

@MarkJThomas sometimes you have to reload the video page on your browser several times for the m3u8 and others to appear.
