Machine Learning Path Recommendations

This is an incomplete, ever-changing curated list of content to assist people into the worlds of Data Science and Machine Learning. If you have a recommendation for something to add, please let me know. If something isn't here, it doesn't mean I don't recommend it, I just may not have had a chance to review it yet or not.

I will generally list things in order of easier to more formal/challenging content.

It may feel like there is an overwhelming amount of stuff for you to learn (because there is). But, there is a guided path that will get you there in time. You need to focus on Linear Algebra, Calculus, Statistics and probably Python (or R). Your best bet is to get a Safari Books Online account (https://www.safaribooksonline.com) which you may already have access to through school or work. If not, it is a reasonable way to get access to a tremendous number of books and videos.

I'm not saying you will get what you need out of everything here, but I have read/watched at least some of all of the following an

List of things for hardening Ubuntu

WARNING

May contain out of date information. Check the comments below!

The list of actions listed below was taken mostly from Book Of Zeus with minor modifications and did the job well for Ubuntu version, which was available at that moment (May 2016). This gist was created for internal use and was never meant to be discovered by the web, although Google managed to find and index this page, which was a great surprise for me. Please check the original source for the updated information (links are provided in most of the sections), and read the comments below: they provide more details about the usage experience.

System Updates

Keeping the system updated is vital before starting anything on your system. This will prevent people to use known vulnerabilities to enter in your system.

A null object pattern implemented in PHP
<?php
# Implements a recursive null object pattern.
#
# Implemented as a trait so any object can make it's properties use
# the null pattern without resorting to inheritance.
#
# The goal is so you can pull data off a partially populated object
# without excessive existance checks.

ElasticSearch Multi-Select Faceting Example
This is an example how to perform multi-select faceting in ElasticSearch.
Selecting multiple values from the same facet will result in an OR filter between each of the values:
(facet1.value1 OR facet1.value2)
Faceting on more than one facet will result in an AND filter between each facet:
(facet1.value1 OR facet1.value2) AND (facet2.value1)
I have chosen to update the counts for each facet the selected value DOES NOT belong to since we are performing an AND between each facet. I have included an example that shows how to keep the counts if you don't want to do this (filter0.sh).
