PIRATING
To hack and to slash with the best of the best
Means you must have a spirit which is steely and cold
You must fight without mercy, from earliest dawn
The heart of a pirate is ruthless and bold.
Richard T. Pettyheart, Scholar
Treatise on Pirates, 1638
Bedroom
You are in your bedroom in the headquarters of the Jolly Roger Pirates Guild. A worn, dingy bed sits off to one corner of this especially tiny room, next to a small nightstand and under a small dirty window. An old wardrobe, in questionable condition, stands near the window. A door leads out to the hallway and a privy lies to the west. This room isn’t at all nice or comfortable or sanitary, but it is home. The grungy window is closed. A cup of water sits on the nightstand. The cup of water contains: dentures. The nightstand is closed. The wardrobe is closed. A pegleg leans against the wall in the shadows of the corner.

EXTRAORDINARY SCENE OF PATHOS

REALLY sure? yes
Okay then.
After the Ball was over,
The Pirate took out his glass eye,
Put his false teeth in water,
Hung up his wig to dry,
Put his peg leg in the corner;
It was an awful sight!
The pirate was scattered all over the room
After the Ball last night.

But you only have one leg! You aren’t mobile enough to walk around.
> x bed
That’s just scenery.
> x nightstand
The nightstand has seen many many better days.
> open nightstand

The nightstand contains:
an eyepatch
> take eyepatch

> wear it
Put the eyepatch directly over your eyesocket? I think not!
> take dentures

> wear dentures
You put the dentures on.
As you put on your dentures, you feel better able to smile and communicate effectively, let alone eat.
> open wardrobe

> take wig

You put the hook on.
You flex your hook a few times. You feel much better now.

I see nothing special about the pegleg.

You put the pegleg on.
As you attach the pegleg to the stump of your leg, you feel much more limber and able to travel.

Privy
This is the privy. You’re certainly pretty lucky to have a room with private...facilities. Of course, that this used to be the official torture chamber of the guild says something about why no one else would live here. The rumors about ghosts and ghouls have so far proved to be entirely false. Your bedroom lies to the east. A cabinet is firmly attached to the wall. The cabinet is closed. Oh, so this is where you left your sword last night! Whew! What a relief. You were sure you had left it in the chambers of that Jenny Wench.
> take sword
lethal sword taken.
> x it
I see nothing special about the lethal sword.
> open cabinet
cabinet open.
The cabinet contains:
glass eye
> take eye
glass eye taken.
> x it
The glass eye seems to look back at you.
> wear it
You put the glass eye on.
Ah yes. Now you can twinkle at the ladies!
> wear patch
You put the eyepatch on.
Ah yes. Very pirate-like!

There is no exit in that direction.
> out
What! Without your parrot?
> x window
Its really really dirty.
> open window
Your parrot irritably flies in through the window, obviously furious at having been left out for the night. He awks and yaks at you in a strong french accent that leaves little doubt that he is mad at you.
> x parrot
Your parrot is mangy, irritable and bad-tempered.
> parrot, hello
I don’t understand.
> say hello to parrot
I don’t know the word “say”.

Hallway
This dank hallway, which leads to east, dead-ends here before a rather grungy looking room. Cold drafts waft up and down the passage, making this a very unpleasant locale to hang about

You hear the sounds of lords fighting with ringing steel and pirates singing bawdy songs as they drink grog amid the soft clicks of gold coins being counted. You hear the hoisting of sails and the call of seagulls, the chant of the merchants and the creaks of boardwalks. All of this promises adventure, excitement and merriment. There are no exits from the Preview other than to quit.
