The School of Design (Script)

These are the notes for my final pitch on Propel. I don't usually use a script, I usually improvise around themes, but the Propel team – under the current circumstances (pandemic) – asked us to work on a script to give everything structure.

Working with Amy Tez (an actress who helps leaders improve their pitching (and who is fanntastic)) we agreed I'd improvise the pitch along a series of wayfinding markers that would help me stay focused and not drift.

There are three elements below:

  1. An indication of what will be on the slides.
  2. A working draft, with notes.
  3. A glanceable script for learning and practicing.

In the working draft, everything in bold is critical, these are wayfinding markers, the key points in the story arc that I'm moving between.

The second version, which I'll update at the end, uses <h1s> for everything so the words render at a large typesize on screen. Useful for practice. I will not be reading everything off a script, I will improvise around the script.

2. Working Draft

Last week shares of Apple hit $1.5 trillion, making it the world’s most valuable company.

Apple is a beacon for the power of design.

Far from thinking of design as an add-on, Apple treats design and business as inseparable, fused at their core. That’s why the company is so profitable.

We’re at the dawn of a new era, where the world’s most valuable companies understand the importance design multiplied by business. as the fuel that drives profit.

/* Replace profitable with valuable. Subtle, but important. Chris McC suggested this. */

Sadly, universities don’t understand this…

I know, because I've taught over 10,000 students at Ulster University. I know what works and what doesn't.

Design is taught in one building and business is taught in another, when they should really be taught together: by the same people, to the same people, at the same time.

The result? Students leave university with lots of debt and very little useful knowledge.

The result? Students leave university ill-prepared for the future. They have zero knowledge of business and – as a result – they’re unable to build the businesses of the future.

The School of Design changes this. We don’t teach design plus business, we teach design times business… multiplying the two.

We’re an art school with the world’s best teachers, a little bit like Masterclass, but with all of our teachers working together to create a curriculum that’s tailored precisely to you.

Our faculty is world class and its one you can’t access anywhere else.

Our students are achieving in three days what I’ve seen students at art school take three months to achieve. It’s so, so exciting.

The pandemic changed everything. It’s normalised tools like Zoom, Slack and Notion and it’s fundamentally changed education.

The genie of education is finally out of the bottle and there’s no way it’s going back. /* Delete this. */

We’re able to teach anyone, anywhere and the possibilities ahead are so, so exciting. /* Map slide. */

We’re changing how design is taught. We have students from over the world from Belfast to Bogotá.

Join us on this journey! Together we'll build the companies of the future and change the world.

At universities, design and business teaching is broken…
