https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/12604 = ui, most important one
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/1137 = mega perk trees
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/10917 = mod that lets you go to bruma (multiple files)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/276 = restores some cut content
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/1179 = big adventure, haven't actually played it yet
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/18330 = lots of random encounters on the road, pretty good voice acting
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/5673 = rebuild helgen. Haven't started this one yet either, but it looks cool. You can't actually add it until after you finish the tutorial otherwise it bugs shit out lol
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/2057 = adds a whole new island. haven't finished it yet but it seems pretty good so far. it's like expansion pack sized.
- QOL
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/684 = berenziah quest markers
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/8379 = lets carriages take you more places, adds river ferries
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/7560 = wearable lantern, hands-free light source w/ optional survival mechanics
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/266 = vanilla bugfixes, required by some stuff iirc
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/54217 = disable fast travel, not needed if using survival mode. With some other mods to offer more in-game travel options it 100% makes the game better, trust me.
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/17729 = sky ui support for survival mode stats (e.g. armor warmth?)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/58266 = lets you tone down how fast you starve/freeze
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/11467 = mark/recall spell that gets better as you level alteration. With expanded carriage network, it's a nice middle ground between no fast travel and vanilla.
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/33116 = 3 perks per level; definitely a little bit OP, but not too bad if you're playing on higher difficulty + survival mode. Ordinator *at least* triples the amount of perks available, so this a good way to experiment with some fun/weird builds? There are more balanced ones out there but I couldn't get any of them to work alongside survival mode, which changes how you get perks during level up. With this one you have to sleep twice and it does the job.
- Random Deps (I think vortex will probably tell you if you need these?)
