Does your app make a sound?

  • Desired talk duration: 45 minutes

Abstract

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

If no one pays for or uses your beautiful and technically perfect product, can it in any case be called great?

We must collectively get out of a product and “we”-centric mindset and concentrate on the users instead.

In this talk, we'll take a look into what actually makes users notice and care about your app. In the spirit of Kathy Sierra, we'll explore what you can do to make your app found and loved in the long term without resorting to gamification and other tactics that undermine what really matters – your users.

This is a sequel to my talk in Frozen Rails #1

Deploying Rails Apps the Right Way

  • Desired talk duration: 45 minutes

Abstract

It's almost a decade since I deployed my first Rails app on a shared host, and yet, it still often feels intimidating. The field has evolved a lot since the early days, but despite efforts to make deploying your apps easier, it's still a wild west and choosing the best host (and even paradigm) is far from a walk in the park.

In this talk, we'll take a look at the current state of the art in Rails deployment and tell you how you can set your app on a good footing – from a simple proof-of-concept to a highly scalable and parallel app serving millions of users – without wanting to dig your brain out with a spoon.
