Cold Outreach: Mentor
The name of the person I contacted is July Tran
Date of contact: 2/18/17
"Hi July, My name is Jack Bevis and I’m a mod 1 FEE student at Turing. I’m reaching out with regard to the mentor program at Turing. We’re about to start week 5 of this inning on Monday, and while I’ve been up to my eyeballs in all that Turing likes to throw at us, I did want to start reaching out to some potential mentors. I also have a bit of background experience in GIS and I’m hoping to be able to work with mapping applications and the geospatial realm after my time at Turing. So, if your schedule allows I’d love to find some time in the next week or so to chat or meet up and pick your brain a bit about some things. Hope you’re having a great weekend and to talk to you soon. Best."
Outcome:
- July responded very promptly and let me know that she had a busy few weeks, but would be happy to meet up in a few weeks. I followed up with her on 3/6/17 and we met to discuss my interests and what I was looking for in a mentor. She let me know that she only does technical mentoring for things related to GIS, which I am interested in pursuing after Turing, but until my fundamentals are better, she remains more of an emotional support for me as well as providing help with learning techniques and referencing documentation. She also recommended a few others on the list to reach out to for help with getting my fundamental javascript better.
This hope that this relationship will be beneficial as I ramp up my job search as July is working in a field that I'm very interested in. I also hope she can provide some insight and strategies into learning new programming languages which she was tasked to do at NREL.
The name of the person I contacted is Mark Miranda.
Date of contact: 3/16/17
"Hi Mark, my name is Jack and I’m a mod 2 student in Turing’s FEE program. I reaching out to you with regard to the mentorship program with Turing. Having recently finished up the first module, I’m feeling like I have a bit of a foundation on which to build my programming skills, but am searching for some technical help with regard to my javascript chops, as well as some project/time management strategies. I see from the mentor sheet that you are available after 5pm on weekdays, would it be possible to set up a time to either meet some time next week, or I could set up a google hangout if that’s easier? I really appreciate any time you have as I’m sure you’re quite busy. Thank you and I look forward to the conversation."
Outcome:
- Mark responded very promptly and we set up a time to pair in person at Turing the following week. We we met we worked through an exercism problem that I had been stuck on for awhile. While the pairing went well and Mark was very helpful, we have not paired since. Mostly because of scheduling conflicts on both are parts. He also indicated that he would prefer to not pair on project work as to not diminish from my own unique experiences with the project learning goals. I can respect that, but as the projects have been the bulk of my time, we have not paired since.
I think this relationship will be beneficial moving forward just as Mark is working in the field and gaining experience pairing with professionals will beneficial when it comes to technical interviews and working with senior devs.
