Updating firmware/software on the Nortel 5520 series

Updating the Nortel 5520

User & Pass

SW Releases 4.x, 5.x, 6.0.x, 6.1.x could be one of the following combos:

  • User: RW Password: private
  • User: RO Password: public

SW release 6.2+:

  • User: RW Password: securepasswd

Upgrade Path

4.2 -> 5.0 -> 5.09 > 5.1 -> 6.0 -> 6.1 -> 6.2 -> 6.36

Instructions for updating

Ethernet Routing Switch 5510-48T HW:03 FW:6.0.0.18 SW:v6.3.4.029 BN:29 (c) Avaya Networks

You will have a string like that all over your switch. FW should match mine, that is the latest I am aware of (and what ships with this). SW should match for you 6.2.3.xxx.

You need a TFTP server set up that the switch can access over its management IP. Then you will go down the menus starting at the top:

Configuration -> Edit -> File System

Then in the right window, on the first tab (Config/Image/Diag file)

You will put in the IP address of the TFTP server, then in "ImageFileName" put the full path of the .img file you want to use. So if the file is at the root of the tftp server's available files you just put the filename, for me, it was under a directory or two:

baystack/v634/5xxx_634029s.img

As far as I can tell the image with the s at the end adds SSH support. The one with the one lower number and no "s" doesn't have ssh.

Once you have the filename in the imagefilename slot, then at the bottom, in the "action" section choose dnldImgIfNewer, then apply at the top.

It will warn you of this, but I will say it as well, THIS RESETS YOUR SWITCH!! It will be down for multiple minutes. So if you have iscsi going over this fueling your ESX cluster, it will all eat shit and die. Your switch will download the software image and the lights will go in circles on the modules (actually looks pretty neat). It will take a few minutes. It should reboot and bring up your switch with the new version afterward though.

Hi there!
I hope you can help me. I was happy owner of ERS 5520 24-PWR, until I started to setup some POE cameras on my property. I connected 1st camera, enabled PoE on switch, set priority to Critical and ERS cannot power it correctly :( I was experimenting with settings but no luck so far. My ERS firmware FW:6.0.0.21 SW:v6.3.6.017 BN:17 (seems to be latest).

It looks like ERS constantly trying to power the camera but without luck. I know that is not camera problem because I alsoe tried with Unifi UAP-AC-LR (PoE) and its the same. Camera model: HIKVISION DS-2CD1043G0-I 2.8mm

Please help me.

@tytuseek I don't have any familiarity with this problem, but my gut reaction is to try switching ethernet cables, power cables, etc. If it's connected to the wall, try another outlet, if to a UPS, try in the wall.

@jcconnell Thank you for your replay. I tried different cables, ports. Switch was connected to the UPS, so I bypassed it and now it is connected to the house main power source, which is brand new. Sadly there is no change at all. I'm afraid that it is firmware bug or it might be a switch malfunction.

Thanks you a lot. We have 2 this Nortel switches and when we got that, we didn't even configure it with Web GUI, because it was too old (2005). We even had thought to utilize this switches, but I found your post and upgraded firmware upto 6.3.6. You are amazing!

I guess it’s just a dump of Avaya’s FTP server before they retired it some time ago leaving us with no way to officially get firmware for our old stuff. I upgraded my Nortel Baystack 5520 with the images I got from this link and I don’t see any suspicious traffic or whatever and the switch is running 24/7 at my place. You wouldn’t want to keep one in your bedroom, mind you 😁

Yeah and the FTP is asking for a password. Am I missing something or are these sources no longer available?
