On Learning

topics: {
      DEEP WORK:
        protect and cultivate (limited) attention,
        ear plugs,
        skeptical of music,
        examine your own process,
        downtime,
        embrace boredom (it's training),
        IG/Twitter/Reddit/SC (rest of mod)

      MIND FOR NUMBERS:
        Effort != results (sorry)
        mental models,
        chunking
        schema,
        focused/diffuse modes of thinking

      ANKI:
        Phone Usage
        Leverage boredom for your advantage
        Rules of Knowledge

      MISC:
        sleep,
        earplugs,
        Index your notebook,
        Slack (/leave, /mute, /dnd <time>)
        Desktop notifications (kill them all)
    }

Success, for me, in this session:

Thoughts:

  • "Some people are just smart"
  • "reading technical material is very valuable"
  • The role of rest
  • The importance of process (any process!)
  • The power of prioritization

Actions:

  • Read "Mind for Numbers"
  • Read "Deep Work"
  • Add phone usage app to your phone
  • Investigate and use Anki

Organizing New Information

a while ago, I read about how to keep well-organized notes on a range of topics. Here's my current notebook, indexed by category: pic.twitter.com/aVsNnGPEpd

Anki

Remove distracting apps from your phone.

Install time tracking app to see how you spend your time. If the most-used apps don't deliver value to you (they probably don't) remove them.

Anki should be your go-to "I'm bored and have a few minutes" app.

A few minutes here and there adds up!

  • on the toilet
  • microwaving your food
  • waiting to cross a street
  • be the millenial everyone gives you crap for being!

Ruthlessly protect your attention and focus

Slack, Do not disturb mode. Turn off notifications that can pop up on your computer. SelfControl app

If your phone is visible, it might cause attention problems. Put it in your bag.

How much do you use your phone? More than you might think. Phone usage tracking app:
