HOWTO: Using FileMerge (opendiff) with Git on OSX

HOWTO: Using FileMerge (opendiff) with Git on OSX

FileMerge (opendiff) can really come in handy when you need to visually compare merging conflicts. Other times it's just a nice visual way to review your days work.

The following method works by creating a simple bash script (git-diff-cmd.sh) that sets us up with the proper command line arguments for Git to pass off files to FileMerge.

Extends the jQuery.support object to CSS3 transition
// jQuery.support.transition
// to verify that CSS3 transition is supported (or any of its browser-specific implementations)
$.support.transition = (function(){
var thisBody = document.body || document.documentElement,
thisStyle = thisBody.style,
support = thisStyle.transition !== undefined || thisStyle.WebkitTransition !== undefined || thisStyle.MozTransition !== undefined || thisStyle.MsTransition !== undefined || thisStyle.OTransition !== undefined;
return support;
})();

(a gist based on the old toolmantim article on setting up remote repos)

To collaborate in a distributed development process you’ll need to push code to remotely accessible repositories.

This is somewhat of a follow-up to the previous article setting up a new rails app with git.

For the impatient

Set up the new bare repo on the server:

Checkout github pull requests locally

Locate the section for your github remote in the .git/config file. It looks like this:

[remote "origin"]
	fetch = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/*
	url = git@github.com:joyent/node.git

Now add the line fetch = +refs/pull/*/head:refs/remotes/origin/pr/* to this section. Obviously, change the github url to match your project's URL. It ends up looking like this:

##git mergetool

In the middle file (future merged file), you can navigate between conflicts with ]c and [c.

Choose which version you want to keep with :diffget //2 or :diffget //3 (the //2 and //3 are unique identifiers for the target/master copy and the merge/branch copy file names).

:diffupdate (to remove leftover spacing issues)

:only (once you’re done reviewing all conflicts, this shows only the middle/merged file)
