This is our totally strict set of guidelines about how to refer to the Linux Users' Group at NC State University, and produce print media about the LUG.
The official, formal name of the LUG is "the Linux Users' Group at North Carolina State University." Never use this except when drafting legal documents.
In situations where a "full" name (but not a legal name) is necessary, use "Linux Users' Group at NC State University." For a shorter name, use "LUG @ NC State."
The name may be abbreviated to "the LUG," but only in situations where the LUG has been introduced with some name including "NC State" beforehand, and it won't get confused with other LUGs.
For domain names, email addresses, IRC channels, or anything with roughly the same set of constraints as one of those, the official abbreviation is ncsulug
. (However, if the name is being used in an explicitly NC State-related context, just use lug
-- for example, lug.ncsu.edu
or lug@lists.ncsu.edu
.)
The following names should not be used:
- LUG @ NCSU (University Communications gets annoyed when you use NCSU outside of domain names)
- NCSU LUG (ditto)
- NC State LUG (this could be interpreted as the LUG for all of North Carolina)
- LOUDBOT Fan Club
The official typeface of the LUG is Open Sans. Univers may also be used when necessary to fit with official University communications. However, Open Sans is open source, which fits better with our mission, and Univers is bloody expensive, which means Open Sans also fits better with our budget.
There is no official typeface for serif or monospace type. You can use whichever font is most convenient (assuming it is not on the lists below).
These fonts may be used when necessary for compatibility, but should otherwise be avoided (e.g. in CSS, put something else in the font stack first):
- Arial
- Times
- Courier
- Lucida
The following typefaces, and all variants thereof, are explicitly banned from LUG materials:
- Comic Sans
- Papyrus
- Wingdings (we have Unicode for a reason)
Anyone using these typefaces will be mocked relentlessly.
The LUG's mascot is an as of yet unnamed penguin, drawn by William Peddycord, who wears a hat that looks like a wolf head. (He/she will be referred to here as, "the penguin," until we can decide on a proper name.) The penguin is not the same as Tux, or Tuffy.
The penguin should always appear with his wolf hat. (The wolf hat should never be represented as the head of an actual dead wolf. That sends the wrong message entirely.)
The primary colors of the LUG are:
- NC State red (PMS 186, approx. #CC0000)
- Plain old black
- Penguin beak orange (PMS 137, approx. #FF9900)
Plain old black should be used for body text -- red and orange are more for design elements. Variations of these colors, and different colors entirely, can be used as appropriate.
