Running nightmare on Amazon Linux

You may have thought of running nightmare on AWS Lambda. But before we can run it on Lambda, we need first to make it run on Amazon Linux.

Provision instance which replicates Lambda environment

According to AWS Documentation on Lambda Execution Environment and available Libraries we would need this AMI image with this alias amzn-ami-hvm-2016.03.3.x86_64-gp2. Keep in mind that AMI-image-id for this instance would be different in different regions (eg):

• In eu-west-1 - ami-f9dd458a
• In us-east-1 - ami-6869aa05

Recently CSS has got a lot of negativity. But I would like to defend it and show, that with good naming convention CSS works pretty well.

My 3 developers team has just developed React.js application with 7668 lines of CSS (and just 2 !important). During one year of development we had 0 issues with CSS. No refactoring typos, no style leaks, no performance problems, possibly, it is the most stable part of our application.

Here are main principles we use to write CSS for modern (IE11+) browsers:

• SUIT CSS naming conventions + SUIT CSS design principles;
• PostCSS + CSSNext. Future CSS syntax like variables, nesting, and autoprefixer are good enough;
• Flexbox is awesome. No need for grid framework;
• Normalize.css, base styles and variables are solid foundation for all components;

Generating Flame Graphs for Apache Spark

Flame graphs are a nifty debugging tool to determine where CPU time is being spent. Using the Java Flight recorder, you can do this for Java processes without adding significant runtime overhead.

When are flame graphs useful?

Shivaram Venkataraman and I have found these flame recordings to be useful for diagnosing coarse-grained performance problems. We started using them at the suggestion of Josh Rosen, who quickly made one for the Spark scheduler when we were talking to him about why the scheduler caps out at a throughput of a few thousand tasks per second. Josh generated a graph similar to the one below, which illustrates that a significant amount of time is spent in serialization (if you click in the top right hand corner and search for "serialize", you can see that 78.6% of the sampled CPU time was spent in serialization). Currently, there is an explosion of tools that aim to manage secrets for automated, cloud native infrastructure management. Daniel Somerfield did some work classifying the various approaches, but (as far as I know) no one has made a recent effort to summarize the various tools.

This is an attempt to give a quick overview of what can be found out there. The list is alphabetical. There will be tools that are missing, and some of the facts might be wrong--I welcome your corrections. For the purpose, I can be reached via @maxvt on Twitter, or just leave me a comment here.
