  장작을 팔자면 살아 있는 나무를 베어야 한다. 내 형은, 지금으로서는 생각도 
할 수 없지만 거의 매일 같이 아름드리 소나무를 찍어 넘겼다.
  
  형에게는 묘한 버릇이 있었다. 나무를 찍기 전에 도끼 등으로 나무둥치를 
가볍게 세 번씩 두드리면서 이렇게 중얼거리는 버릇이 그것이다.
  
  「나무요, 나무요, 도끼 들어가요.」
  
  내가, 나무에게 그렇게 말하는 까닭을 묻자 형은 이렇게 대답했다.
