Auto Insurance for no travelers in the US

Auto Insurance for no travelers in the US

Context:

  • I'm airbnb hopping, changing address every month, and have no permanent address anymore.
  • My current car insurance (Metromile) noticed this and dropped me (they require you to park your car at least 10 months a year in the same zip code).
  • I can't find an auto insurance because I don't have a permanent address, they don't want me.
  • Using a friend's address or a PO box seems to be fraud insurance, which can lead the insurer to deny me if I get into an accident and need them to pay for something.
  • I'm in California

The law

  • It's weird that car insurers can discriminate against homeless people (which is what I am legally I guess).
  • I find it weird that a car insurance can drop you based on the zip code where you car is, isn't that illegal as well?
  • Most states require you to insure you car, it's also a dumb idea not to have an auto insurance.

Solutions

  • Not pay for insurance and don't do anything. This will lead to the DMV suspending your vehicule registration.

Registered vehicle owners are required to insure their vehicles. If the DMV doesn’t receive proof of insurance for a vehicle, it will suspend the vehicle’s registration, and until proof of insurance is submitted, the vehicle may not be operated or parked on public roadways. this fee is only 14$, and if your car is in a garage it's fine. it seems like fill an affidavit of non-use you can get away with no suspension (at the cost of not using your car during that time).

  • Not pay for insurance but pay a DMV deposit of 35k$.
  • Sell car
  • Find a permanent address.
  • Find an insurer that is OK with me being homeless.

Solutions?

  • Open an LLC and get company car insurance?
  • full-time RV insurance

Go to DMV and get the qualifications for a class B van conversion. Once you get DMV to register it as a RV, then the insurance should follow.

  • how about students?
  • local insurer? and set our address as our current airbnb (and change it as we change airbnb)
