Moving Out From SF

Moving Out From San Francisco

San Francisco is not a great city

San Francisco is one of the most horrifying showcases of the US homelessness crisis; the rents are absurdly high; the weather is not great, I pretty much never have the opportunity to wear my shorts and flip flops, I always need a sweater, and if I want to stay out later in the night then I need a jacket; It is not very dense, meaning that you can't really walk around and see shops and restaurants and bars, unless you are fine with limiting yourself to a single street of a neighborhood. In conclusion, SF is really not that great of a city, for someone who likes to live in a city.

We could work from anywhere

Companies are going full remote, for an extended period and perhaps forever. Considering the previous section, it makes really no sense to stay here and continue to pay an absurd rent for very little value in return. The only thing tying me to this place are:

  1. good asian food
  2. furnitures
  3. friends

The first item is not an essential, and there are many places in the US with good Asian food. The second item is an annoying but necessary phase, in which I have to get rid (or find a place to store) furniture. The last item is perhaps not a problem if we plan right. Let me explain: if the plan is to leave SF to travel, with the idea of going back to SF unless I find a place that I like more, then I am not leaving my friends. I am merely taking an extended holiday.

Where to work from?

It sounds like I must stay in the US, due to the coronavirus. I also need to stay in a timezone that allows me to do my work. Large plan is to stay 1-2 months here and there (using AirBnB), to visit some cities or some national parks.

  • Same timezone:
    • San Diego. Not too far from SF. Great weather. Beach.
    • Los Angeles. Not too far from SF. Great weather. Beach.
    • Seattle. Never been there.
    • Portland. Never been there.
  • -3H
    • Hawaii. 3 hours difference, must go through a 2-week self-quarantine. Seems like a good idea for winter as temperatures will be between 20C to 30C.
  • +2H
    • Austin. Not sure if I really like that city.
    • Dallas. Never been there. Jason says it sucks.

Issues

  • what if we get sick?
  • what if we have an issue with invisalign? (our orthodontist is in SF)
  • what about mail?
  • what will be our principal residence (finance, billing, etc.)?
  • what if AirBnB gets shut down temporarily due to the coronavirus (happened earlier this year)?

TODO

  • talk to manager
  • find out a date to leave
  • find out first destination
    • perhaps a place in the north that is a good temperature right now
    • then LA/SD as the north hemisphere gets colder
    • then hawaii for the winter
  • tell landlord
  • book airbnb
  • list things to store, if not enough then sell everything bit by bit
