Shopping:
http://www.hadakft.hu/en/uzlet-terkep/
They claim to sell 'english second hand clothes', and while the clothes are imported, i don't think they are actually second hand but still very cheap. If you dig a little you can find some real gems. One of the better shops is located on the ground floor of Corvin mall.
Castle District:
Touristy but very beautiful. Great views of the city. The restaurants are overpriced and not very good, from what I have heard. Don't pay to go up the Fisherman's Bastion, it there is no admission after 7, perhaps even earlier in the winter.
Downtown Pest:
The area inside the Korut, the inner ring, served by tram lines 4 and 6, is the busiest area of Budapest. There are mostly offices and government buildings in the 5th district, but just strolling the streets of the 6th, 7th and 8th district is quite fun. You can discover hidden little squares and plenty of cafes and bars...Check out the "Rom kocsmak", the ruin pubs, which you will mostly find in abandoned building around Kiraly utca, where most of the nightlife is happening.
The Hills:
Climb up Gellert Hegy and Rozsadomb if you wanna escape the hustle and bustle of the city
Gul Baba tomb:
This tomb of the turkish poet is located right next to Rozsadomb. The cobbled Gul Baba utca, which is right next to the tomb, sends you back into the middle ages.
Thermal baths:
Gellert furdo is way overpriced, check out Kiraly, Lukacs or Szechenyi...
Public Transport:
- Take metro M1, the oldest Subway on the continent
- Take the tram lines that run along both sides of the Danube
Watch a movie:
Most movies at the theaters are subtitled, but check beforehand. There are quite a few cute old cinemas + prices are really low compared to here. Check out Puskin if you wanna watch a movie in an royal setting or any other small theater for the artsy athmosphere (Muvesz, Toldi, Taban,...)
Food:
I never eat out there as my Grandma stuffs me, so I have no idea where to eat well. Check out this website: http://www.funzine.hu/
This place at Batthyany square near your hotel used to be quite good and cheap and perhaps it still is. It serves Pancakes with all kinds of fillings: http://www.nagyipali.hu/etlap.html
Try Turo rudi: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%BAr%C3%B3_Rudi
It took me some time getting used to it but now I love it, just like every other Hungarian I know....
