Columbia Transit announced Wednesday it reached its goal of two million riders for the 2009 fiscal year, which ended in September. Despite initial predictions of a decrease in bus ridership, there are more Columbia passengers than ever before. Transit supervisor Drew Brooks said changes in the economy may have contributed to this year's success.
"We gained a lot of riders when gas prices were high, and I think a lot of riders have decided to stay, even when gas prices now are lower," Brooks said.
Brooks said other factors may have contributed to the increase in ridership, such as the community's increased attempts at being more environmentally friendly and a decrease in car purchases. However, one change made in 2008 could have been detrimental to Columbia Transit's success. Last year it increased fares, the first time in twenty years. Despite increase in ticket prices, some passengers said taking the bus is still worth it.
"It's not a huge deal for me," MU student Dakota Raynes said. "Just on car insurance and gas I save at least five, six hundred dollars a year."
Brooks said he hopes there will be an even bigger increase in ridership for the current fiscal year.
