While implementing the hacks thing is probably necessary, I would strongly suggest reporting this to astrometry.net. At a minimum, it (astrometry.net) doesn't see to be doing what it is supposed to be doing.

Does our software default to ignoring the existing WCS or does it default to checking it? Do we have any way of knowing which coordinates are the correct ones?
