Types of road

Road

A non-tracked route connecting A to B.

Has many variants, listed below...

Way

Small side-street coming off a road

Street

A public way that has buildings on both sides

They often run perpendicular to avenues...

Avenues

Large street, often with trees at the sides.

Avenues often run East/West, while the streets usually run North/South; search "City Street Network Orientation" on google images for infographics.

Boulevard

A wide avenue with trees either side. Often has a median in the middle.

Lane

Narrow road, usually in rural area.

Drive

Long widding road that follows terrain features such as lakes and mountains.

Terrace

A street that follows the top of a slope.

Crescent

A roughly crescent- or arc-shaped road.

Alley

Narrow road, usually between buildings, often not driveable.

Promenade / Esplanade

Road near the ocean. Promenade = pedestrianised version of esplanade.

Place / Cul-de-sac

A road that leads to a dead end.

Court

Like a place, but with a turning circle or roundabout at the end.

Plaza / Square

Road surrounding an open public space containing businesses or streets.

Frontage / Access / Service

Interfaces to largr road network.

Highway / etc

Major public road that connects cities. Usually 3+ lanes each way.

National road

A smaller highway, often with 2 lanes each way.

Interstate

State funded highway.

Turnpike

A highway part-funded by a toll booth.

Freeway / Motorway

Like a a highway, but split in to two large one-way roads (going in opposite directions). Usually 2+ lanes each way.

Beltway / Ring-road

Surrounds an entire city or district

Parkway

Decorated public road, often adjacent to park land.

You park on a drive way but drive on a park way.

Causeway

A road, often raised, that crosses low or swampy ground.

Junction

Where two or more roads cross

Interchange

A junction where some or all roads are at different heights.

Intersection

A junction where all roads are at same height
