These are the common everyday commands used in most projects:

Installing a package deps

npm install

yarn install

Adding a new dependency

npm install grunt --save-dev

yarn add grunt --dev

Overloading the npm install for adding a dep always felt weird for me

Removing a dep

npm uninstall grunt --save

yarn remove grunt

The --save has caught me a bunch. I get it's for consistency with install, but its something you just got to memorize. I don't really see a use-case for 'delete a folder in your node_modules' as the default behavior.

Adding a global

npm install grunt

yarn global add grunt

Yarn is more work here, agreed, which I'm onboard with becuase I think it should be harder to set up a global than a project specific dep.

This only happens to me by accident because I forgot --save, then suddenly you've got a new global (and I want no globals on my machine, personally)

Upgrading a dep

npm update grunt@10

yarn upgrade grunt@10

Though most of the time I use:

yarn upgrade-interactive

🆗 (just generally different terminology, but interactive is a nice way to work if it's more than one dep)

Running a script

npm run xyz
# and in special cases:
npm xyz

yarn xyz

There are no special cases for yarn, any script becomes a top level command. You also don't have to consider when the npm params end via the --.

Running a dep's cli

npx xyz

yarn xyz

I generally grok the reasonings for a separate npx tool, but yarn add typescript; yarn tsc works out of the box in yarn. Because it's in the CLI, it's documented with the rest of the system.
