LLM Introduction: Learn Language Models

Purpose

Bootstrap knowledge of LLMs ASAP. With a bias/focus to GPT.

Avoid being a link dump. Try to provide only valuable well tuned information.

Prelude

Neural network links before starting with transformers.

Nix Flakes and Direnv on Mac OSX (Catalina)

Development environment with Nix Flakes and Direnv

This document is targeted at those who seek to build reproducible dev environment across machines, OS, and time.

It maybe easier for remote teams to work together and not spending hours each person setting up asdf/pyenv/rbenv, LSP servers, linters, runtime/libs. Nix is probably the closest thing to Docker in terms of development environment.

Flake is used here because it provides hermetic build, with absolutely no reliance on system environment (be it Arch/Catalina/Mojave). Also it freezes dependencies in flake.lock so builds are reproducible.

This gist provides the setup to develop Java/Clojure/Python applications on Nix. But it can be easily adapted to ruby, nodejs, haskell.

Effective F#, tips and tricks

Architecture

  • Use Onion architecture

    • Dependencies go inwards. That is, the Core domain doesn't know about outside layers
  • Use pipeline model to implement workflows/use-cases/stories

    • Business logic makes decisions
    • IO does storage with minimal logic
    • Keep Business logic and IO separate
  • Keep IO at edges

makeWrapper and wrapProgram #nix

makeWrapper and wrapProgram

Nix generally assumes run-time dependencies is a subset of the build-time dependencies.

This means many Nix builder functions try to automatically scan the output for runtime dependencies and "rewrite" them for runtime usage.

However shell scripts which are often exported by packages do not get this automatic scanning treatment.

This means you have to use the makeWrapper package and use either the makeWrapper or wrapProgram utility functions.

A set of instructions on how to fix the harfbuzz + Infinality issue and restoring good-looking, Infinality-like font rendering.

Disclaimer: Please follow this guide being aware of the fact that I'm not an expert regarding the things outlined below, however I made my best attempt. A few people in IRC confirmed it worked for them and the results looked acceptable.

Attention: After following all the steps run gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache as root, this prevents various gdk-related bugs that have been reported in the last few hours. Symptoms are varied, and for Cinnamon the DE fails to start entirely while for XFCE the icon theme seemingly can't be changed anymore etc.

Check the gist's comments for any further tips and instructions, especially if you are running into problems!

Ubuntu, NetworkManager and Docker DNS workaround

Docker issues are frequently logged for DNS resolution in containers because it doens't inhert or get values for DNS from NetworkManager which leverages a built in dnsmasq to inteligently manage DNS.

Perminant workarround

sudo bash -c "echo listen-address=$(ip -4 addr show dev docker0 | grep -oP '(?<=inet\s)\d+(\.\d+){3}') > /etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d/docker-bridge"
sudo systemctl reload NetworkManager
sudo bash -c 'echo -e "{\n\t\"dns\": [\"$(ip -4 addr show dev docker0 | grep -oP "(?<=inet\s)\d+(\.\d+){3}")\"]\n}" > /etc/docker/daemon.json'
sudo systemctl restart docker
