I tested this code, and it looks like it has a fundamental flaw: it isn't compatible with recursion. In onFunctionReturn(), the funcReport is based on the funcInfo, which is singleton to each function. While funcReport.count is incremented correctly, funcReport.startTime will be reset on each successive onFunctionCall in the recursion. Each successive onFunctionRetrun will compute its time delta based on the last call to onFunctionCall in the recursion. I recommend tracking the start times in a stack, instead of the funcReport.

I see that some functions take more time than overall (>100%). How can that be?

Same problem.

While this profiler claims that it "works with LuaJIT", it does only work with JIT turned off. With JIT enabled, the required debug hooks are not reliably called.

Profiling results are bogus because function calls may have been registered, but the return hook from these calls was never triggered.

I'm getting a crash:

lua: summary.lua:24: attempt to index a nil value (local 'profile')
stack traceback:
        summary.lua:24: in function 'ReadProfile'
        summary.lua:110: in main chunk
        [C]: in ?

It seems to me that ReadProfile expects either a file object or a filename, but it's in fact called with either a file object (if the file contains a single profile) or a line from the ile (if the file contains multiple profiles)? In my case the report contains multiple file names, so it sends a single line to ReadProfile, which tries to open the line as a string. At least as far as I can understand.

what about tail return?
