Install PostgreSQL 10 on Ubuntu

Install PostgreSQL 10 on Ubuntu

This is a quick guide to install PostgreSQL 10 - tested on Ubuntu 16.04 but likely can be used for Ubuntu 14.04 and 17.04 as well, with one minor modification detailed below.

(Optional) Uninstall other versions of postgres

To make life simple, remove all other versions of Postgres. Obviously not required, but again, makes life simple. If you have data in your previous version of postgres that you'd like to retain, then this is not recommended. Instead, you'll have to use pg_upgrade or pg_upgradecluster.

Signing your Git Commits on MacOS

Methods of Signing Git Commits on MacOS

Last updated March 13, 2024

This Gist explains how to sign commits using gpg in a step-by-step fashion. Previously, krypt.co was heavily mentioned, but I've only recently learned they were acquired by Akamai and no longer update their previous free products. Those mentions have been removed.

Additionally, 1Password now supports signing Git commits with SSH keys and makes it pretty easy-plus you can easily configure Git Tower to use it for both signing and ssh.

For using a GUI-based GIT tool such as Tower or Github Desktop, follow the steps here for signing your commits with GPG.

Repository Maintenance Levels

After reading Why I'm Frequently Absent from Open Source by James Long and listening the corresponding The Changelog episode, I dwelt on the idea and believe that open source maintainers...

  • ... should never be ashamed if they don't have time for a project.
  • ... should be honest with themselves and open with their users so that everybody can be on the same page
  • ... are people and they have at one time or another responsibilities or hardships that they need to attend to which reasonably take them away from a project
  • ... may also reasonbly decide that they don't like the direction of a project or that they would like to explore other things and may leave a project permanently.

Along this line of thinking I've created a set of descriptions for different levels at which a project might be maintained. A maintainer can use these to announce to their users the current ability that they have to dedicate to a pr

GitHub Wiki How-To

How do I clone a GitHub wiki?

Any GitHub wiki can be cloned by appending wiki.git to the repo url, so the clone url for the repo https://myorg/myrepo/ is: git@github.com:myorg/myrepo.wiki.git (for ssh) or https://github.com/my/myrepo.wiki.git (for https).

You make edits, and commit and push your changes, like any normal repo. This wiki repo is distinct from any clone of the project repo (the repo without wiki.get appended).

How do I add images to a wiki page?
