Notes on Debian Gnome Desktop

Some notes on setting up the Gnome desktop on Debian.

This is only for Debian, not Ubuntu.

Base system is Debian 12 Stable (Bookworm).

No joy installing nvidia drivers. Sorry.

Extensions to install and configure

  • Dash to Dock (michele_g)
  • Desktop Icons NG (DING, by rastersoft)
  • Lock Keys (fawtytoo)
  • OpenWeather (screwball)

Gnome Overview mode

By default, Gnome opens to Overview mode on login. I find this annoying. To fix:

  • Go into the settings for Dash to Dock (yes, you should install it) or the Panel to Dock extension
  • Toggle Appearance > Show overview on startup > Off.
