ES Modules are terrible, actually

This post was adapted from an earlier Twitter thread.

It's incredible how many collective developer hours have been wasted on pushing through the turd that is ES Modules (often mistakenly called "ES6 Modules"). Causing a big ecosystem divide and massive tooling support issues, for... well, no reason, really. There are no actual advantages to it. At all.

It looks shiny and new and some libraries use it in their documentation without any explanation, so people assume that it's the new thing that must be used. And then I end up having to explain to them why, unlike CommonJS, it doesn't actually work everywhere yet, and may never do so. For example, you can't import ESM modules from a CommonJS file! (Update: I've released a module that works around this issue.)

Implementation notes on react's scheduling model as of (shortly before) 16.8.0

While the public API intended for users to use is the scheduler package, the reconciler currently does not use scheduler's priority classes internally.

ReactFiberScheduler has its own internal "mini-scheduler" that uses the scheduler package indirectly for its deadline-capable scheduleCallback.

This is kind of a documentation of implementation details that I suppose will be gone by the end of the year, but what can you do.

Background

One of the biggest missed opportunities thus far with HTTP/2 ("H/2") is that we are not yet able to sunset WebSockets in favor of H/2. Web Sockets and H/2 both support multiplexing messages bi-directionally and can send both textual and binary data.

Server Sent Events ("SSE"), by contrast, are not bi-directional (they're a "server-push-only" channel) and binary data cannot be sent easily. They are, however, very simple to implement. Adding to the menagerie of options, RTCPeerConnection can also be used to signal data to applications in a low-latency (but potentially lossy) way.

Hi Nicholas,

I saw you tweet about JSX yesterday. It seemed like the discussion devolved pretty quickly but I wanted to share our experience over the last year. I understand your concerns. I've made similar remarks about JSX. When we started using it Planning Center, I led the charge to write React without it.
