Ross' status for Winterfest '21:
Thursday evening 2/18:
- Power: been on since last night, supposed to start rolling again at some point but hasn't.
- Internet: tethering to my phone. AT&T's tower is down, I think, I'm getting terrible signal from them through the dish. Google will start throttling me at 22 gigs and I've already used 5 gigs.
- Propane: This morning I got the tank refilled, this is now fine.
- Water: pipes are still burst, plumber knows about it but I can't get him on the phone, this probably will not be fixed until next week at the earliest.
- Food: I have some food. Without water I can't do any dishes. Restaurants are still almost all closed.
Thursday evening pt 2:
- Power: according to ERCOT the transmission companies have been told to bring up anything they can, and while some blackouts may be required later, SBEC (my company) is so small and far down the list I don't think it'll be a problem. Power is likely now stable, and has been up for 24h in any case. I am turning back on both desktop machines and setting the clocks on things that have clocks.
- Water: It is entirely too cold to do anything with hoses, I've decided. This will be a goal for tomorrow.
I'll update this as things change.
Edit: Frequently given answers:
- I don't need to melt snow to get water, because for one thing there's no snow, and for another I have all the water in the world, I have a well. I don't have a way to safely get it into the house other than carrying it by hand.
- The pipes are all under the house, whichever one(s) burst hasn't damaged anything but the pipes themselves. I just need someone to come fix it and I can turn the water back on.
- The roads are fine, I could leave whenever I want and frequently do, but everywhere I go it's worse than here.
- The heat comes from propane but the blower to move the hot air around is electric. So running the heater requires both (although it doesn't require much more power the warmer you make it)
- Last time I checked, the unmetered connection is getting 1 mbit down and 6 up (yes, it's backwards, this is why I think their tower isn't transmitting correctly). Normally it's 40 each way, which means I can't really do anything gaming-wise online until this is back up.
