Working With Electronics

Random notes of important things to know when working with electronics. Or mainly a reference guide for me.

LEDS

  • standard size is 5mm
  • many people recommend the 3/16" drill bit for drilling holes
  • I used the 13/64" (5.1594mm) for a "large"? LED and it required some pushing.
  • Useful conversion chart appears here: https://mdmetric.com/tech/cvtchtfdm.htm

Wiring

  • common jumper wires or stranded/single core wires are either 22 gauge or 24 gauge
  • can tin the end of a stranded wire using solder to keep it from splitting

Soldering

  • the standard soldering stand comes with a natural sponge, not artificial, to keep it from melting
  • the sponge should be damp, but not soaking
  • Use rosin core solder for electrical work. Acid core is for plumbing.

Batteries

  • LEDs require 3V. Either 2 AA or a single CR (watch) battery depending on project size.
  • See my Gist about batteries.
