Mod 2 Week 1

Reflect on your habits from last module:

  1. Reflect on your habits from last module. What behaviors and activities were helpful for you? What activities and behaviors could be more effective for you? What processes would you like to try differently this module to become more effective at your work and as a software developer?:
    • The habits from last module that worked well for me were time management, was able to successfully manage my project work time, the area I could improve in or be more effective in, is creating time for my family.
    • Another habit that I need to improve on, is forcing myself to take breaks, One thing I will be doing differently this module is incorporating one fo the timers that has been reccomended and following the requirements for breaks.

Setting intentions for this module:

  1. Who do I want to be this module? What specific habits would help me get there? How are those habits tied to the identity of a software developer?
  • This module I want to be helpful to not only myself, but to other students when possible. The way I tend to be effective at this, is to incorporate techniques that I learned in my past, data mining, data gathering, exploitation of resources (in a positive way) to assist myself and others.

Incorporate temptation bundling to create a new habit by using this template:

  • After [CURRENT HABIT], I will [HABIT I NEED TO DO].

  • After [HABIT I NEED], I will [HABIT I WANT TO DO].

    • ( After [class is over], I will [Go to the gym] (After[I go to the gym], I will [watch a show with the wife]

How to enjoy “hard” habits: Reframe your habits to consider their benefits rather than their drawbacks; name 3 habits that you have to do and explain the benefits of them. How do they further your goals longterm? How will they add to your processes as a successful developer? At the end of the day, how do they add to your life?

  1. I have to start going to the gym again:
    • Although this may not be directly related to my success as a developer, it does have secondary affects that will positively affect my success as a developer. For example, working out allows me to get my mind off of things, work out some stress/anger and allows me to come back with a clear mind.
  2. I have to increase the amount of family time:
    • Increasing the amount of family time taken, will also increase my overall effectiveness as a software developer, having a good work/life balance allows us to stay fresh and motivated to continue pushing forward. This also adds value to my life by allowing me to grow deeper connections with those I love.
  3. Increase work/break ratio:
    • This is a habit that can almost immediately provide results, working for long periods of times without breaks will likely lead you in to unproductive struggle. One way to break out of the unproductive struggle phase, is to take a break and give yourself some time away from the problem and computer. Additionally, taking breaks will allow you time to take care of other requirements around you.

Environment design: how does your environment set-up currently help you with your habits? How could it be improved to make it easier for you to follow through on your habits?

  • My current set up somewhat helps out with my habits, I am in a central working location that allows me access to other members of my family, and the outside world. Also, my work environment gives me plenty of space (screen/physical) to have the ability to multi-task or have multiple resources open. The main way that I had in mind of how to improve my working environment has already been resolved. I needed additional screen space, I went out and purchased a larger monitor that I can now use with my set up.

Apply the 2-minute rule to reframe 2-3 of your habits by scaling them down into the 2-minute version. How does this reframing help you think about shaping your new identity as a software developer?

  • Habit = GO to the gym
    • Reframed: put on my workout clothes
    • Reframed: leave the house
  • Habit = Increase family time
    • Reframed: Turn off my computer
    • Reframed: Ask my family what they want to do
  • Habit = Increase work/break ration
    • Reframed: Incorporate use of a timer
    • Reframed: Step away from the computer

Looks good! It seems like you're being really thoughtful about who you want to be as a person both here at Turing and in your life outside of Turing, and how those two things compliment one another. I really like the reflection you've done about what habits will make you successful in your studies and look forward to seeing how that impacts your time in M2. 👍
