  1. Taking stock of where you are: what have you accomplished this module? What have you learned? Where are you stuck (have you not been able to follow through on outreach? Is your resume not finished?)?
I've made a good draft of my resume and wrote a pretty decent cover letter that I can use as a template/reference for future cover letters, so I freel pretty good about where those are at. However, I haven't actually outreached to anyone at a company yet, so I definitely plan to make that a priority over intermission. I also have been feeling not as good about potential companies I identified interest in - for many of them, the more research I did about them, the less I was interested in them. This was due to issues like a long commute (over an hour), extremely small teams that likely wouldn't hire a junior dev or have the ability to provide the mentorship I'm looking for, or companies that seemed to have their engineer

Mod 3 Favoriting Code Review for Linus

Mod 3 Favoriting Code Review for Linus

Specification Adherence: 2

On the homepage, the favoriting works well - it's easy to toggle between favoriting and un-favoriting. The Favorites page also displays as expected. It might have been nice to actually include the Favorites page in the nav bar, as what the "filter" button does might not be clear to a user not familiar with the project specs.

I don't see the option to favorite a movie on the actual Details pages, so it seems that specific feature is missing. Additionally, the heart icons are kind of difficult to see on the homepage; I would suggest making them a bit larger for improved UX.

Project Professionalism: 3

  1. Back to your resume and cover letter you’ve been working on:
  • What other next steps do you want to take to make these two components stronger?

For my resume, change up the color scheme on the resume to make sure it's really readable; give it to my friends who work in engineering & see if they have additional feedback. For my cover letter, edit it to make sure I am talking about the actual tech pieces intelligently and in detail.

React Router Prework

This gist contains a short assignment I'd like everyone to complete before our formal lesson. The prework involves reading some of the React Router documentation, and will allow us to keep the lesson more hands on.

Instructions

  1. Fork this gist
  2. On your own copy, go through the listed readings and answer associated questions
  3. Comment a link to your forked copy on the original gist

  1. Find a position or use a position you’ve put on your Huntr board and write a cover letter for that position in a Google doc or gist. Reference these cover letter resources as well as the session to complete your cover letter. Post the link to your cover letter here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ScUYuRAvm9zPGxTDhss9f7adfNHTHA_XylZ4qm9u4wU/edit

  2. Review your cover letter with a peer some time this week. What feedback did your partner give you? What next steps will you take to make your cover letter even stronger?
My peer suggested that I change some of the language to be more direct, such as changing the words "I would" to "I am". Also avoid some of the repetition of language such as multiple instances of "I would love t

1. Refine your career vision: What are the values that will drive your job search? What are your goals for your job search? What kind of role do you see yourself pursuing in your job search? Based on your latest version of your career vision, list the top 3-5 industries and companies you’ll pursue in your job search as of right now. Why did you pick these industries/companies? How do they relate to the values and goals you have for yourself in your job search?

For my job search, my top values are finding a company that helps make other peoples' lives better and overall leads an ethical company. I also want to make sure that I would be working on a team where mentorship is valued and encouraged, so I know that I will be able to continue to grow and get stronger as a junior front end developer. Other important values in my search are finding a place that provides a good work/life balance and preferably some flexib

What is a "data model", and how does it relate to the DOM in a front-end application?
The data model is the architecture of your application that stores all of the core information needed for the application. It is often manipulated and changed and is then used to display HTML on the DOM for users to view. The data model is the "source of truth" where updates to core information unrelated to the visual display are kept, whereas the DOM is simply where that information is displayed, not where it is updated or manipulated.

What is a "framework?" And how does it differ from a "library?" A library is a collection of functions that are packaged together and allow you to accomplish some specific useful tasks. You can call these functions whenever you like within your code. A framework is a collection of libraries that provide developers with pre-written code that makes accomplishing certain routine programming features and tasks much easier. Unlike a library, a framework has many m

DTR Refactor Tractor

DTR

Project: Refactor Tractor

Group Member Names: Jake West, Rachel Williams, Katy St Saveur, Horacio Borrego

Schedule: Most of us like to cut off working by 8pm during weekdays, so we plan to work each day starting in the afternoon around 1pm through 8pm. We will generally be available on weekends to work as well. We will meet each day either after class or after lunch each day to check in, plan for the day, and make sure we are all on the same page.

Working Style: We want to be strategic about how we do the work. When we are learning new skills, we all think it is important to start working on each of those tasks together as a group with driver/navigator, to enhance our learning. Once we are all feeling more comfortable with everything, we can do more of a divide/conquer style approach to be more efficient, while still being open to pairing whenever a group member feels it is appropriate.

Career Journal

Career Journal Template - 2005 Cohort

Overview

  • What is a career journal? The journal will help guide you through the process of discovering who you are as a new developer and how that translates into your career goals. It’s a way to check in with yourself through self-reflection, prompts, and questions, organize your targeted job search, and remember who you met as you build a professional network.
  • Make it your own. Add questions and areas to reflect on each week. Just don’t forget to share all of your successes and achievements along the way!
  • Ongoing progress checks. Throughout the module, you'll respond to the other prompts and update your progress in your document during professional development workshops and set aside work time.
  • Module Expectations. A completed career journal is required for successfully passing the module. The career development team will be assessing your progress throughout the module, and you will submit it for final review in week 6. You will also

What is your greatest strength and how do you know?

My greatest strength is a combination of how organized I am and how detail-oriented. In every job I've had since I entered the workforce about 6 years ago, I've been very proficient in keeping track of multiple assignments and tasks and prioritizing my work to meet the various deadlines. Additionally, I am extremely detail-oriented, a skill that has helped me both succeed and move up in various jobs. In copywriting, this helped me catch and correct typos or grammatical errors and have the drive to continue refining language until I was satisifed with it. In my job building websites, I became consistent with implementing UX best practices very quickly and eventually become the QC team leader for the sites, checking that others on the team were adhering to the
