1. Refine your career vision: What are the values that will drive your job search? What are your goals for your job search? What kind of role do you see yourself pursuing in your job search? Based on your latest version of your career vision, list the top 3-5 industries and companies you’ll pursue in your job search as of right now. Why did you pick these industries/companies? How do they relate to the values and goals you have for yourself in your job search?

For my job search, my top values are finding a company that helps make other peoples' lives better and overall leads an ethical company. I also want to make sure that I would be working on a team where mentorship is valued and encouraged, so I know that I will be able to continue to grow and get stronger as a junior front end developer. Other important values in my search are finding a place that provides a good work/life balance and preferably some flexibility in work location and working hours. My top industries to focus my search in at the moment are health/fitness tech, education, and travel/tourism, as all of these industries align both with my values and my experience. I also think all three have the potential to enrich peoples' lives.

2. Build your resume What will you emphasize in your resume that directly relates to your targeted industries?
Pick a template from those listed in the Templates section here: https://careerdev.turing.io/resources/resume_resources
Order your content in this way:

3. Upload your resume to CV Compiler by following these steps:

  • Go to https://cvcompiler.com/students/turingschool
  • Click on “Improve Your Student Resume”
  • Authorize it with either LinkedIn or GitHub
  • Fill out the fields with your Name and Email and the promo code Turing2005
  • Upload your resume

Based on the feedback you received from CV Compiler, what updates will you make to your resume?

  • Add the following skills to my resume: APIs, OOP, Unit Testing
  • Alter summaries for Experience section to be more accomplishment-focused (Especially WCS job) & use more explicit numbers (i.e. I built over 100/150 sites)
  • Alter project blurbs to use more tech-focused verbs like architect, build, code, develop, engineer, overhaul, solve etc.
  • Use bullet points for job descriptions in EXPERIENCE
  • Delete street address & zip code; just use Denver, CO
  • Re-order resume to include contact info just below name

4. Set up your Turing Alumni Portfolio:

  • Log in with the link you got in your email. Going forward, log in at alumni.turing.io/user
  • Fill out all fields
  • Select “publish” before saving (projects must also have “published” selected)

Reflection questions:

  • What do you want this portfolio to say about you?
I want it to accurately reflect the skills I have developed in front end development. Additionally, I want it to briefly tell a story about me, my background, and why engineering interests me, while also emphasizing my "soft" skills and what I could uniquely bring to a company.
  • How will you continue to add to this to portray your story and showcase the kind of work that demonstrates your brand?
I will keep updating this portfolio as I learn new skills and complete new projects that better reflect my array of development knowledge.

5. Ian’s workshop this week is designed to help you break down your interest in specific industries even further by exploring their tech stacks to decide if you want to utilize any of their tools in upcoming projects. Make a copy of his template and post a link to your copy here to show what research you’ve completed: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15rSAGEniLsMQ5Ab0BOclPdIpg53Eu-v5jD4_cuYD0OA/edit#gid=1879342254

Hi Rachel, great work this week! I like your resume, I think the pinkish font might need to be changed as that color can be sometimes hard to read. You have really started to build some direction with your search though! keep it up!
