Foods:

  • Sandwiches: In chile we are really into sandwiches, with a huge variety of them to try, in a way, they are to Chile what Tacos are to Mexico
  • Empanadas: Pocket's of dough filled with food, the most traditionals are:
    • Pino: Meet and onion mixture (with a little bit of egg, 1 olive and 1-2 raisins)
    • Mariscos ❤️: (Seafood) one of my favorites made with an arbitrary mix of
    • Queso: (Cheese) traditionally it's just cheese, but can be mixed with other ingreedients (like chicken, mushrooms, shellfish or shrimps)
  • Humita: It's a corn dough steamed on it's own leafs (similar to the mexican tamale)
  • Pastel de choclo: The same filling of the empanada is covered with the same dough from the Humita
  • Traditional Preparations: These are common preparations that are reused with different ingredients to make a huge arrange of options
    • [anything] a la Parmesana ❤️: Made with a blend of cheese and cream, the most typical is made with Machas (a local type of razor clam)
    • [anything] al Pil-Pil ❤️: socked in garlic infused oil. my favorite is Ostiones (Scallops)
    • [anything] a lo Pobre: traditionally a Filete (Steak) with a side of grilled onion, fries and a sunny side egg.
    • Pastel/Chupe de [anything]: A thick mixture of bread cream and chese baked with seafood inside. Traditionally Jaiba (Crab) or Locos (Local type of Avalone)
  • Ceviches ❤️: A Peruvian dish but very popular in chile. usually made of fish (try Ceviche de Corvina) or with other seafoods (like Ceviche Mixto). the fish get's cooked nad flavored in lemon and onions to produce a very light dish.
  • Curanto: It's a traditinal food from the south made of a mix of seafood, pork and doughs all cooked toguether (traditionally) on a hole in the ground. It's hard to find in Santiago though.

Drinks:

  • Terreoto: (earthquake) is a drink based on sweet wine and other sweet liquors (different between places) very good to get you drunk and make your floor move (hence the name) most places sell you a "replica" (aftershock) for a cheaper price after you finished your first drink
  • Pisco Sour: A very simple drink made with Pisco, lemon and sugar.
  • Wines: Almost any wine you buy is likely to be good (if it's botled with a cork, avoid the boxed or screw bottled ones) I generally preffer Shiraz and Cabernets but try a Carmenere for a lighter flavor. There are plenty of wineries close to Santiago so visiting them makes for a good day trip

TODO: Make a selection of good wines

  • Leche de Tigre: A peruvian preparation with a blend of fish ceviche and pisco. Think of it like a fish bloody-mary

Places to try them:

Vegan/Vegetarian places:

I don't know many but here are a few ones i've tried:
