qemu to linux mapping of smbios / dmi information

Mappings for DMI/SMBIOS to Linux and dmidecode

Information can be put into dmi tables via some qemu-system hosts (x86_64 and aarch64). That information is exposed in Linux under /sys/class/dmi/id and can be read with dmidecode. The names are very annoyingly inconsistent. The point of this doc is to map them.

Mappings

Example qemu cmdline:

qemu-system-x86_64 -smbios type=<type>,field=value[,...]

qemu-system-x86_64 -smbios type=0,vendor=superco,version=1.2.3

Emulating ARM with QEMU on Debian/Ubuntu

You might want to read this to get an introduction to armel vs armhf.

If the below is too much, you can try Ubuntu-ARMv7-Qemu but note it contains non-free blobs.

Running ARM programs under linux (without starting QEMU VM!)

First, cross-compile user programs with GCC-ARM toolchain. Then install qemu-arm-static so that you can run ARM executables directly on linux

If there's no qemu-arm-static in the package list, install qemu-user-static instead

HOWTO fork a MIT licensed project

No, you are not allowed to change the copyright notice. Indeed, the license text states pretty clearly:

The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all
copies or substantial portions of the Software.

But you are allowed to add a copyright notice.

If you want to keep the MIT license, which is what I would advise you to do, you only need to add a single line to the license file, before or after Copyright (c) 2012 Some Name with your own copyright notice. The final LICENSE file will look like this:

The MIT License (MIT)

How To Load The HIBP Pwned Passwords Database Into MongoDB

How To Load The HIBP Pwned Passwords Database Into MongoDB

NIST recommends that when users are trying to set a password you should reject those that are commonly used or compromised:

When processing requests to establish and change memorized secrets,
verifiers SHALL compare the prospective secrets against a list that
contains values known to be commonly-used, expected, or compromised.

But how do you know what are the compromised passwords? Luckily Troy Hunter put a lot of effort into building the "Have I Been Pwned (HIBP)" database with the SHA1 hashes of 501,636,842 passwords that have been compromised on the internet. Sweet.

Devops Best Practices Checklist

Find the original here article here: Devops Best Practices

DevOps started out as "Agile Systems Administration". In 2008, at the Agile Conference in Toronto, Andrew Shafer posted an offer to moderate an ad hoc "Birds of a Feather" meeting to discuss the topic of "Agile Infrastructure". Only one person showed up to discuss the topic: Patrick Debois. Their discussions and sharing of ideas with others advanced the concept of "agile systems administration". Debois and Shafer formed an Agile Systems Administrator group on Google, with limited success. Patrick Debois did a presentation called "Infrastructure and Operations" addressing
