<h2>Introduction</h2>
<p>In the past five to ten years, the immigration rate from Ireland to the United
States has increased. The biggest impact on new emigrants from the country centers
on the end of a period of strong economic activity known as the <a href=
"http://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/decade-lost-as-children-in-ireland-bear-brunt-of-recession-1.1979612">
end of a period of strong Irish economic activity</a>, known as the Celtic Tiger.
With the Tiger in hibernation, many Irish are on the move.</p>
<h2>Why The Recent Influx?</h2>
<p>Since the end of the Celtic Tiger, <a href=
"http://www.tradingeconomics.com/ireland/unemployment-rate">the unemployment
rate</a> continues at a high clip, which topped out nearly 15% in February, 2012.
This has led thousands of Irish to leave their homeland in pursuit of better
economic opportunities in other Western, English speaking nations like Canada, the
UK, and the United States. With a total national population of just over 4 million,
emigrant totals are on the rise and are reaching nearly 100,000 per year. Most of
those leaving are young, educated Irish.</p>

<p>The Irish Recession is prompting the biggest uptick in immigration to the states
in decades, and continues to rise.</p>

"source: Central Statistics Office, Ireland" /></p>
<h2>Where have they settled?</h2>
<p>In keeping with historic precedents, many immigrants from Ireland have settled
in the larger U.S. cities, like New York, Boston, and Chicago, as this great map
courtesy of the <a href=

<p class="text-muted"><cite>Source: United States Census Bureau Data, 2000; New
York Times</cite></p>
<p>Additionally, with the economy in such a downturn, Irish people are beginning to
stay rather than earning money and eventually going home. There are already
Irish-American communities to be found in the U.S. as this map shows. The most
significant areas of "Irishness" occur on the Eastern Seaboard, largely due to
proximity to airlines that provide service from Dublin and Shannon and highly
populated cities with many job opportunities and long-established Irish
communities.</p>

<p>Right here in New York City, there is a significant population of Irish
immigrants. They are particularly concentrated in the borough of Queens, where the
Woodside neighborhood is not only home to a large contingent, but an <a href=

job searches, visa updates, and getting relatives from Ireland into the country
legally and safely.</a> The below chart shows the distribution of Irish nationals

The Irish Immigrant Community in New York City

By Sean Devlin and James Wasserman

Pitch

The Irish community in New York City has long been an influential one. With dozens of mayors, police commissioners, lawmakers and countless other difference makers coming from Ireland or from immigrant families, the legacy of the Irish in New York is firmly cemented in history. However, New York City remains one of the few places where Irish immigration remains strong, with thousands of Irish crossing the ocean every year in search of work, education, or an overall better life. In fact, in not one, but two boroughs of New York City, there are specific immigration centers for Irish migrants (the Emerald Isle Immigration Center) that strive to help those who come to the United States find work, schooling, and provide cultural education to keep Irish culture alive in New York.

Who Cares: The larger Irish American community in New York City.

Why They Care Now: With the downturning Irish economy, Irish immigration could be on the rise once again, particularly to New York where the community is already robust.

We propose looking at the following facets of immigrant life to figure out patterns of Irish life in America. As a white, primarily English speaking group, the Irish are not generally seen as "foreign" in the traditional sense, especially given the fact that 16% of all Americans have some Irish ancestry. These facets include:

  1. Total number of Irish immigrants to New York City since 2010

  2. Irish Immigrant population by borough

  3. Education level for Irish immigrants

  4. Occupations for Irish immigrants

  5. Average length of stay for Irish immigrants

  6. Plans to return to Ireland (Y/N...propose a survey)

  7. Irish language usage at home (this is sometimes used as a way for Irish people, particularly those from the more rural areas of the country, to communicate amongst themselves)

  8. Immigration status of Irish in New York

With the following methods, we will attempt to construct a more accurate picture of the modern Irish immigrant in New York as opposed to the romanticized portrayal of Irish American experiences that have arisen over the past 150 years.

<p><h2>Introduction</h2></p>
<p>There are a plethora of economic and social factors that contribute to the emigration rate from Ireland to the United States. Major points of influence for emigrants are a high unemployment rate, a downturn in housing values, and the <a href="http://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/decade-lost-as-children-in-ireland-bear-brunt-of-recession-1.1979612">end of a period of strong Irish economic activity</a>, known as the Celtic Tiger. Irish immigration tends to be concentrated on the larger East Coast cities, due to proximity to air routes back and forth to Ireland, work opportunities, and historic precedence. </p>
<p><h2>Why The Recent Influx?</h2></p>
<p>Since the end of the Celtic Tiger, <a href="http://www.tradingeconomics.com/ireland/unemployment-rate">the unemployment rate </a> has remained high, reaching a startling 15.1% in February, 2012. This has led thousands of Irish to leave their homeland in pursuit of better economic opportunities. With a total national population of just over 4 million, the fact that emigrant totals are on the rise and are reaching nearly 100,000 per year is of great concern. </p>
<p class="text-center"><<a href="http://imgur.com/4B6keFl"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/4B6keFl.png" title="source: imgur.com"/></a></p>
<p>These economic failings, largely rooted in the value loss of the housing market and the overall downturn of the EU economy, has led to a recent uptick in Irish immigration to the United States, with a significant upswing starting in 2009, the beginning of the Irish Recession, and continuing today. </p>

Overview

The Irish community in the United States has been vibrant and influential since the first major waves of migration from Ireland to the U.S. began in the mid nineteenth century. More than 1 in 10 Americans claim some Irish ancestry, and over half the presidents of the U.S. also have some Irish background.

<img src=http://placehold.it/450x100/000000/FFFFFF&text=where+irish+americans+live>

Imgur

The data, which comes from the American Community Survey, shows that Irish Americans tend to be concentrated on the coasts, particularly in the Northeast. This is likely due to the historical incentive for the Irish to settle in cities where there were manufacturing bases. This is particularly true of the major hubs in Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City.

<img src=http://placehold.it/600x100/000000/FFFFFF&text=Irish+Ancestry+in+the+NYC+area>

Imgur

When we look at a closer view of the New York metro area, we see that there are larger concentrations of Irish Americans in the suburbs surrounding New York rather than the city itself, with the exception of a few spots in Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island where current immigration is still strong. This leads us to the conclusion that due to the fact that the Irish are one of the older immigrant groups in the United States, they have had more time to financially establish themselves and escape the city for higher income housing and job opportunities in the suburbs.

New York City remains one of the final real strongholds of Irish immigration to the United States in the 21st century. With robust communities in both Queens and The Bronx (including cultural centers, sports clubs, and immigration status aids at the Emerald Isle Immigration Center in Queens), there are plenty of resources to further our work on the subject. CUNY's own Social Explorer has been especially valuable for us in our search, as we are able to filter down and see by borough and census tract how many Irish immigrants traveled to New York and settled up to 2013. Social Explorer's main tools for us are the American Community Survey and updates on the 2010 census. We compiled the following map, which has been very useful at finding current immigration trends.
