One of the most storied basketball rivalries in the nation, the Philadelphia Big 5 is a round robin tournament played each year. Since its inception in the 1950s, all five teams have double digit championships. However, with their larger recruiting bases and national alumni connections, Villanova and Temple Universities have taken the lead in recent years, with Temple leading the series at 27 championships of a total 59 played since 1955. <h1>Irish Ancestry Claimed by U.S. State</h1>
<p>This map shows that Irish ancestry is most heavily claimed in the Northeastern United States, especially Massachusetts, where over 16% of the population possesses Irish ancestry. This is the result of many factors, not least of which center on the historical manufacturing and shipbuilding centers on the Eastern Seaboard, which employed many Irish in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Additionally, when Irish communities began to spring up in the 1850s following the Irish potato famine, many relatives followed for work opportunities in a nation free from British rule, which created many of the Irish neighborhoods that still exist to this day in major East Coast cities like New York and Boston.</p>

Pitch:

Why we care now: New York City has always been a city of immigrants. Since large scale immigration to the United States began in the 19th century, New York has been consistently at the forefront of locales that immigrants from abroad flock to. However, as time progressed, the demographics of these immigrants to New York City has changed a great deal. We'll attempt to answer a few questions about these different groups, such as why they came to New York City, where in the city they settled, and whether or not they moved to another area after a generation or two. Discovering these answers can lead us to a better understanding as to how our city is set up in terms of ethnic neighborhoods. We'd also like to make a map/GIF to show changes in neighborhoods over time.
