With the coming and passing of E3 2018, Final Fantasy 7 Remake followers were left in the dark as they received zero news about the game from the panels of Square Enix and Playstation. In wondering about the game's future, I wanted to lay out all of the information we have to date and give my honest and unfiltered opinion about this game's future. Howdy everyone, this is Radical Edward for Less Than Epic and today we're diving back into the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

So like many of you I watched the E3 panels for news of my favorite game's remake and was dumbfounded when yet again we received nothing. I figured that this must be the time that Sony & Square Enix would tease something given it's been nearly 18 months since any kind of official announcement about the game. However, given the lack of anything from E3 2018 I think we have to take a new and hard look at the state of the project.

Since the last official press release about the Final Fantasy 7 Remake in January 2017, here's what has happened.

  • In the summer of 2017 we learned that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which was being developed by the studio CyberConnect2, was being moved in-house at Square Enix. In some ways this was good news as this meant the game would be of a higher quality than we originally anticipated, however, we quickly learned through statements from the development team at Square Enix that they could not use roughly 2 full years of the work CyberConnect2 had put into the game. This means that whatever timelines we had set for the game had to be pushed back at least 2 years, links in the description, and possibly more given Square Enix's track record for release schedules. http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/final-fantasy-7-remake-release-date-2993127

  • Between the summer of 2017 and March 2018 we didn't get a whole lot of news about the game. We learned than characters like Biggs, Wedge, Jesse and Cloud were getting full redesigns and we saw some concept art from small shows Square Enix put on, but we didn't learn any big news about the game itself. However, in March 2018 we got confirmation that Square Enix was actively and aggressively hiring for core positions on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, again links in the description.

  • The most confusing part about this news was the time between the confirmation of the game being moved in-house at Square Enix and the confirmation of them hiring core members of the project. That time difference was about 9 months, leaving us wondering if we lost yet another year of development on the game to mismanagement. However, there's no way for us to confirm or deny this theory as we've literally received nothing in terms of press releases to date... Which brings us back to E3 2018. https://kotaku.com/square-enix-is-hiring-core-members-for-final-fantasy-1823692767

  • We know the game is being worked on in Square Enix's in-house studios and we know the game has a growing team of professionals working on it. We also know that it's been 18 months since Square Enix has announce anything even remotely about the game's development or progress, and that's where I finally want to jump in with my opinion.

  • In the previous video about the the Final Fantasy 7 Remake I predicted a late 2019 to early 2020 release of the game, and that was based on a shareholder presentation Yosuke Matsdua, the CEO of Square Enix, gave to his shareholders in 2017, links in the description. That prediction was also contingent on us receiving a huge press release at E3 2018, a press release that never happened. So where does that leave us? http://www.hd.square-enix.com/eng/news/pdf/17q4outline.pdf

  • In my honest, unfiltered and saddened opinion this game is likely 2 - 5 years behind any of our wildest and optimistic estimates. If Kingdom Hearts 3 is anything to go by, I wouldn't even be surprised if this game is push all the way back to 2025. Listen, I know that's bad news and as a massive Final Fantasy 7 fan myself it's not news I wanted to be presenting. However, this is my honest opinion at this point. I have been following this game since it's earliest inceptions and I can't see any way this game comes out anywhere remotely close to our original estimates.
