How effectively delete a git submodule.

To remove a submodule you need to:

  • Delete the relevant section from the .gitmodules file.
  • Stage the .gitmodules changes git add .gitmodules
  • Delete the relevant section from .git/config.
  • Run git rm --cached path_to_submodule (no trailing slash).
  • Run rm -rf .git/modules/path_to_submodule (no trailing slash).
  • Commit git commit -m "Removed submodule "
  • Delete the now untracked submodule files rm -rf path_to_submodule

osxfuse + ntfs-3g + Yosemite = NTFS R/W
Remove osxfuse if installed via homebrew:
> brew uninstall osxfuse
Install osxfuse binary and choose to install the MacFUSE compatibility layer:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/osxfuse/files/latest/download?source=files
Reboot (optional but recommended by osxfuse)
Install ntfs-3g via homebrew:
> brew update && brew install ntfs-3g

Python script to find the largest files in a git repository.
#!/usr/bin/python
# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-
# Python script to find the largest files in a git repository.
# The general method is based on the script in this blog post:
# http://stubbisms.wordpress.com/2009/07/10/git-script-to-show-largest-pack-objects-and-trim-your-waist-line/
#
# The above script worked for me, but was very slow on my 11GB repository. This version has a bunch
# of changes to speed things up to a more reasonable time. It takes less than a minute on repos with 250K objects.

Git Submodules basic explanation

Git Submodules basic explanation

Why submodules?

In Git you can add a submodule to a repository. This is basically a repository embedded in your main repository. This can be very useful. A couple of usecases of submodules:

  • Separate big codebases into multiple repositories.
