This might be a very opinionated blog post, because the subject itself is very opinionated. But I feel this is why leaders fail, because they do not possess the below traits.
- Temperament
-
Categorization of Temperament based on colors. A very Nice article about it in Michigan State University Extension https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/real_colors_a_tool_for_discovering_personality_temperament_part_1 .
But let me summarize it. Human temperament according to this theory is categorized into 4 colors Blue, Green, Orange and Gold
- **Blue**
- Traits: Enthusiastic, sympathetic, communicative, compassionate, idealistic, sincere and imaginative
- **Orange**
- Traits: Witty, spontaneous, generous, optimistic, eager and bold.
- **Green**
- Traits: Perfectionistic, analytical, conceptual, cool, calm, inventive and logical
- **Gold**
- Traits: Loyal, dependable, organized, thorough, sensible, punctual and caring
We have all the colors , but its just that sometime some color shows up more.
I prefer a leader who has more traits of Blue and orange, not only they are my favorite colors but also, they have the two most important traits according to me Sympathetic and Witty.
- Empathy
-
- Empathy is to read and understand people and be in-tune with others. If you cannot connect to people, then you cannot be their leader too. This traits comes naturally, its hard to imitate or learn. You need to have it within you. If you can understand and relate other problems and success that means you can connect with them.
- Open minded
-
- Don’t be left or right opinionated person. You cannot be stubborn towards a certain direction always. With situation you have to think from other point of view or direction. Often leaders have their likes and tastes and they would like to always impose those to their team. Don't do that. You have to adapt to the team and make smaller incremental improvements.
- Positive thinker
-
- Very important to be a leader and to be a good person. A positive thinker will always send good vibes around. Whenever you talk to them you will see a sense of hope and future. No matter how bad the situation is a good leader will take out something positive about it to boost her or his team.
- Non-opportunist
-
- In my small career I have seen leaders being direct competitor to their juniors or teammates. They do not realize it but they are absolutely trashing the morale of team mates. A leader leads the teams but also gives due credit to the team, nourish them, praise them, boost their morale, push them forward to help them show what they are capable of doing.
- Non-secretive
-
- As a leader you do not hide things from your team and do stuffs secretly. You will lose the trust from the team members eventually, and also you are creating a bad environment in the team where people will start working on silos and do not share.
- Fun to talk
-
- Again one of the top requirements by me to be a leader. A leader should be fun to talk to. You don’t want to go to a 24 x 7 pissed head leader and talk to them.
- Excellent Delegator of work
-
- Being a leader does not mean you have to do everything and you have the at most responsibility. One of the top jobs of a leader is how she or he delegates the work to its subordinates. This also brings a sense of responsibility among the team and feel the importance within the team.
- Good listener
-
- As a leader you have a to be an excellent listener. I don’t have to emphasize this more.
- Other important traits
-
- Trust worthy, Visionary, Passionate, Respect others
Before someone ask me this 🙂
I have never been leading any team in a true sense, but I understand what a good leader should be after working under various leaders.
