Pairin Servey Reflections and Results

Reflections

  • I think one of my greatest strengths is my curiosity and love of knowledge. I love understanding how things work and the underlying principles behind WHY things work. This curiosity has helped me become a great student. It has helped me develop a good memory for basic principles as well as good research skills in finding resources for learning and explaining new content and verifying it's veracity. I know this because people have often told me that I have a good memory and that I always understand a subject beyond the bare minimum that has to be known. I've often spent hours searching for extra sources, and more in-depth explanations of topics and themes that interest me, beyond what was required.
  • Because of this, I work best in an environment that is open, transparent, and often changing. I love adapting to new changes, and implementing them into my workflow. I don't mind authority as long as it's not used to obscure, belittle, control, or corrupt people and the flow of information. I love working on teams that are open, collaborative and generous. Eeryone is willing to explain, ask questions and experiment. I do sometimes like learning on my own but definitely prefer working in teams where I can bounce ideas off of other people and help them focus their ideas as they do mine. +I think a few of the soft skills that I could improve one would be empathy, confidence, tact, and extroversion. I would really like to feel comfortable and familiar approaching, meeting, and speaking with people whom I do not know intimately and better be able to become friends with them. I recently moved in to a new apartment and have found myself avoiding my roommates and being hesitant in asking them questions about the basics of the house. They gave me no reason to be hesitant, and were even friendly and inviting the first day that I arrived. I would really like to improve my conversational skills and my charisma when meeting new inidividuals. This would be an invaluable tool for networking as well as working on a team, which is what I prefer.
  • Software development is a perfect job for the curious. There are always new techniques, and languages, and frameworks being added and improved upon that there is always a way to improve your coding and to better understand how certain applications work. I will also use my strengths to better interact with my coworkers/teammates to help with new ideas, as well as improving upon existent applications/projects that we have. Curiosity often leads to creativity and passion which can then draw others in as well as motivate and inspire individuals while simultaneously bringing making the group/team more cohesive.
  • Knowing these strengths will better help me choose which projects I may prefer over another (which ones pique my curiosity more) and knowing the pace and drivers needed to help me complete a task will help take me far in my career as a software developer. It will also help me asses which type of company I'd like to work for. You can sometimes get a pretty good feel for a company when you walk into an interview, and when you are given the opportunity to ask questions. I want to work in a company that prioritizes transparency, teamwork, acessibility and rewards curiosity and innovation. Knowing my strengths will also help me realize which aspects of software development I'm very good at, while knowing where I could use some help/suggestions from other developers.
