How to setup mount / auto-mount USB Hard Drive on Raspberry Pi

How to setup mount / auto-mount USB Hard Drive on Raspberry Pi

Follow the simple steps in the order mentioned below to have your USB drive mounted on your Raspberry Pi every time you boot it.

These steps are required especially if your are setting up a Samba share, or a 24x7 torrent downloader, or alike where your Raspberry Pi must have your external storage already mounted and ready for access by the services / daemons.

Step 0. Plug in your USB HDD / Drive to Raspberry Pi If you are using a NTFS formatted drive, install the following

Calculate the phase of the moon in bash and get the appropriate icon. This can be used to put a picture of the phase of the moon in your bash prompt.

I used the "Simple" lunar phase calculator from here:

http://www.ben-daglish.net/moon.shtml

It seems to work well on OSX. The call to date that I use is not portable to linux or solaris since date is one of the most infuriatingly inconsistent utilities.

git clone into non-empty directory

Let's say you start a project locally, and do some editing.

$ mkdir -p ~/git/foo && cd ~/git/foo
$ touch NEWFILE

Now you decide you want to create a new github repo and track it, but the directory is non-empty so git won't let you clone into it. You can fix this, thusly:

Garage door opener with Arduino

iPhone Garage Remote

Instead of buying two door remotes, I bought one and control it with my iPhone.

Parts

First, I stole nearly everything from MyDoorOpener.com. Their version uses parts I could not find and requires a $6 iPhone app. Let's improve on that.

Almost everything can be found at RadioShack.
