Why would I want to convert my work group to a SIG ?
SIGs are just about creating working groups that are not formally
attached to a specific governance body. Thierry and I observed that UC
working groups had a hard time attracting developers, creating a gap
when time came to implementing the work group priorities (and a lot of
frustration). We observed that TC working groups had a hard time
attracting users caring about a particular topic, creating a distance
resulting in misguided design and lost opportunities. And Board working
groups look like an even more impenetrable entity, probably limited to
1) A public cloud passport code should be universally accepted by all participating public clouds (no vendor specific stuff). This gives the user the most empowerment, and makes the vendor worry about their own internal way of doing things in a self-contained way.
2) It should be for a fixed amount in dollars i.e. $50. Then the vendor converts that internally to their billing currency if necessary.
3) It should be redeemable once in full at a chosen public cloud. No splitting. This is for operational complexity concerns.
4) It should be possible for one person to pick up a few passport codes (but not loads), so that they can trial a few clouds. Perhaps make them prizes?
5) Public cloud vendors simply make the voucher value deductible from the user's first bill. That way their accounts team does what they'd normally do, then just apply a fixed value discount. They'll need to convert dollars to their billing currency, but that's not especially difficult.
