6OOOO Gallons of oil have spilled in Rio de Janeiro . allegedly caused by fuel thieves who drilled into an oil pipeline, the oil spilled into the Estrela River and then spread to the famed Guanabara Bay. The pipeline is owned by Transpetro, the largest oil and gas transportation company in Brazil, who said that authorities have been alerted and clean-up teams have already cleared 75 percent of the oil as of Monday morning.

A collaboration between scientists from the University of Exeter, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, and Greenpeace Research Laboratories found evidence of microplastics in all of the 102 turtles in a recent study. Scientists do not yet know the effects of micro plastics.

Air

A new study posted in Nature, looked at ice core samples from Greenland that show ice melt at it’s highest rate in the last 35O years. the runoff rate over the past two decades was 33% higher than the twentieth-century average, and 50% higher than in the pre-industrial era.

Snowy mountain winters are being "squeezed" by climate change, according to scientists from Scripps Research Institute. The study shows that rising temperatures are reducing the period during which snow is on the ground in the mountains - snow that millions of California’s rely on for their fresh water.

Soil

The population of wild reindeer, or caribou, in the Arctic has crashed by more than half in the last two decades, numbers fell from almost 5 million to around 2.1 million animals. weather patterns and vegetation changes are making the Arctic less habitable, resulting in the population decline according to the Arctic Report Card released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The report also points out that micro plastic pollution is on the rise,and that air temperatures for the last 5 years have exceed all records since 19OO.

Urban Spaces

Cincinnati has become the 100th U.S. city to set a goal to move to 100% renewable energy after approving a resolution to move the city to 100% renewable energy by 2035,

By unanimous vote, the California Building Standards Commission has determined that From 2020 onwards, all new homes being constructed in the state will be required to have 2-3 kilowatts of their electricity sourced from solar panels.

Denmark-based AP Moller Maersk, world’s largest maritime shipping company, last week said it will cut its carbon emissions completely by 2050.

Here are a few Headlines from the COP24 conference on climate change in Poland:

The US made a dire pitch for coal and other fossil fuels, and were laughed at by the entire crowd.

Saudi Arabia, the US, Russia and Kuwait objected to the conference "welcoming" the IPCC report on the impacts of a temperature rise of 1.5C,

Meanwhile, the private sector has expressed throughout the conference going green is good business.
